ChatGPT Visibility Services: What They Really Do

The Short Answer: ChatGPT visibility services sell three real things: crawler access, content worth citing, and measurement you can reproduce. OpenAI says plainly there is no way to guarantee top placement, and it publishes no ranking formula for anyone to optimise against. Score any quote by how much of it you could verify yourself in robots.txt, server logs and analytics.

The category has a naming problem. Some vendors mean “we will get you mentioned when someone asks ChatGPT for a supplier”. Others mean “we will check your robots.txt file and write you four blog posts”. Both invoice the same way, and the second one is usually honest about what the platform allows.

So the useful question is not whether the category works. It is which parts of a scope rest on something OpenAI has actually published, and which parts rest on a vendor’s theory. That line is drawable, and you can draw it yourself in about an hour.

We should declare our position first. IZI Digital Marketing sells this work from Petaling Jaya, so read what follows as a set of tests you can apply to us as easily as to anyone else. The Malaysian context matters too. Internet access is now close to universal among individuals in the Department of Statistics Malaysia’s ICT Use and Access by Individuals and Households Survey 2024, so reach is rarely the binding constraint. What matters is whether there is anything on the site an answer engine would want to quote.

One contrast frames everything below. Google now publishes both a guide and a reporting surface for its own AI features. OpenAI publishes neither. The video covers the Google side, which is worth knowing mainly as the benchmark ChatGPT has no equivalent for.

PART 1 · DIAGNOSE

What Do ChatGPT Visibility Services Actually Sell?

IN BRIEFThree things, and only three: permission for OpenAI’s crawler to read your site, content a model would rather quote than paraphrase, and a way to count what happens next. That overlap with ordinary search work is why AI SEO and traditional SEO rarely deserve two invoices.

Strip the vocabulary away and every honest scope in this category reduces to those three. What differs between quotes is how much of the fee sits on each one, and whether the vendor admits which parts they cannot control.

  • Access is a permission, not a ranking. OpenAI’s own overview of its crawlers states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. This is a yes-or-no setting, and it takes minutes to check.
  • Content is the only part with real leverage. A model summarising the same five paragraphs everyone else published has no reason to cite any of them. A page with a figure, a decision or an experience nobody else has published gives it one.
  • Measurement is where most quotes get thin. There is no publisher console for ChatGPT the way there is for Google Search. What you can count lives in your own analytics and server logs, which means you can count it without the agency.

Notice what is missing from that list. Nothing about special files, special markup, or a submission process. Those do not exist for ChatGPT search in the way they exist for a sitemap ping.

Bottom Line: Access, content, measurement. If a line item on your quote does not map to one of the three, ask which published document it comes from.

PART 2 · DIAGNOSE

Which Levers Has OpenAI Said Actually Exist?

IN BRIEFTwo, stated in one paragraph of OpenAI’s help documentation: allow OAI-SearchBot, and let its published IP ranges through your host or CDN. Everything past that is inference, which is the same standard we apply when judging whether a GEO agency delivers.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search help article is unusually direct about the limits. Ranking, it says, is based on a number of factors, and there is no way to guarantee top placement. What it does name as necessary for inclusion is the crawler permission and the network access. That is the whole published lever set, and everything beyond it belongs to the ordinary AI search visibility programme a business may already be funding.

Two practical details follow from the crawler documentation, and both are worth putting in a contract.

  • The settings are independent of each other. A site can allow OAI-SearchBot so it appears in search answers while disallowing GPTBot to keep its content out of foundation-model training. A vendor who treats these as one switch has not read the page.
  • Changes are not instant. The same crawler documentation notes it can take roughly 24 hours from a robots.txt update for OpenAI’s systems to adjust for search. Any promise of a same-week visibility change is describing something else.
Consultant’s Note: The most common real fault we find is not a robots.txt line at all. It is a Malaysian host or security layer quietly blocking unfamiliar bot traffic, so the crawler is allowed on paper and refused at the door. Check the server logs before you buy a strategy — the answer is usually sitting there, and it is free to read.
Bottom Line: Two published levers, both binary, both checkable in an afternoon. Judge a scope by what it adds on top of those and why.

What Does Each OpenAI Crawler Actually Control?

IN BRIEFFour named user agents, four different jobs, and only one of them decides whether you appear in ChatGPT search answers. Most confusion in this market comes from treating them as one bot, which is also why AI SEO, GEO and AEO work belongs with whoever already controls your robots.txt.

OpenAI User Agents and What Each Governs
The four OpenAI user agents, what each one governs, and what blocking each one costs a site owner.
User agent What it governs What blocking it costs you
OAI-SearchBot Whether your site can surface in ChatGPT’s search features You are excluded from search answers; navigational links may remain
GPTBot Whether your content may be used to train foundation models Nothing in search — this setting is independent
ChatGPT-User User-triggered visits, not automatic crawling Not the search lever; robots rules may not apply to it
OAI-AdsBot Safety checks on landing pages submitted as ChatGPT ads Only relevant if you advertise; visits ad pages only

PART 3 · DESIGN

Which Scope Shape Fits Your Business?

IN BRIEFThree shapes cover nearly every Malaysian SME buying ChatGPT visibility services: an access audit, an access audit with a publishing rhythm, or a full programme folded into existing search work. Site size and who writes decide it, not ambition — the same test we use in our Malaysian SEO agency shortlist.

The mistake we see most is buying the widest shape because the category sounds new. It is not new enough to justify a second retainer alongside the search work you already fund.

DECISION BOX · WHICH SCOPE SHAPE TO BUY

Shape What it covers Commitment Best fit
Access audit only Crawler and firewall check, baseline, written handover One-off, days not months Under 30 pages, or you already have an agency
Audit plus content The above, plus two to four source-worthy pages a month Quarterly, reviewable You hold the expertise but not the writing time
Folded into search One retainer covering Google, ChatGPT and reporting Ongoing, single fee 200+ pages, or several service lines

Verdict: Buy the access audit first whatever your size — it is cheap, it is finite, and it often ends the conversation by revealing the real blocker. Widen to content only once you know the crawler is getting through.

Bottom Line: Start one shape smaller than the vendor suggests. Widening a scope is easy; unwinding a twelve-month retainer is not.

BENCHMARK BRIEFING 2 OF 4

Where Does One Malaysian Prompt Actually Go?

IN BRIEFA single question becomes several rewritten searches before any page is read, and OpenAI documents that it may add your approximate location and stored memories to the rewrite. Understanding that chain explains why generic pages lose, and why brand citation in AI answers behaves so unlike a keyword ranking.

From Prompt to Citation: Who Controls What
Stages between a user prompt and a cited source in ChatGPT search, what OpenAI documents at each stage, and what a Malaysian site owner can influence.
Stage What OpenAI documents Your influence
BEFORE THE SEARCH RUNS
Approximate location General location inferred from IP and may be shared with search providers None directly — but it favours pages that name a real place
Stored memories Where enabled, memories may sharpen the rewritten query None — user-side setting
THE REWRITTEN QUERIES
First rewrite Prompt is rewritten into one or more targeted queries Cover the plain-language question, not just the head term
Follow-up queries More specific queries may follow after reviewing early results Answer the narrow sub-question on the same page
RETRIEVAL AND CITATION
Third-party providers Search partners are used, with Bing and Shopify named in the help article Keep the site healthy in those indexes, not only Google’s
Sources shown Answers may carry inline citations and a Sources panel Be the page that supports the claim, not one that restates it

Aggregated by IZI Digital Marketing from OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search help article and crawler documentation, 2026. Licence.

One Malaysian consequence deserves naming. Because a search partner sits in the chain, index health outside Google stops being optional housekeeping. Registering the site with Bing’s IndexNow and its webmaster tools is free, takes an afternoon, and is one of the few actions in this category with a documented mechanism behind it.

PART 4 · DEPLOY

What Should the First 90 Days Deliver?

IN BRIEFFour deliverables in a fixed order, each one you can verify without asking the agency. A quarter is long enough to prove the work happened and short enough that a bad fit stays cheap, which is the honest frame for whether AI SEO is worth paying for yet.

Sequence matters more than speed here. Publishing before access is confirmed produces pages that nothing can retrieve, and you will not find out for months.

  1. Confirm crawler access in week one. Read the live robots.txt, then read the server logs for OAI-SearchBot requests and their response codes. Allowed in the file but refused at the firewall is the single most common finding.
  2. Record a baseline you own. Note referrals from ChatGPT in your analytics, indexed page count, and current enquiry volume by source. Without this, month six has nothing to compare against.
  3. Publish two pages nobody else could write. Real objections, real numbers from your trade, real decisions you have made for customers. This is the test of whether the content budget buys your knowledge or generic filler.
  4. Agree the review date and the evidence. Name the month, the two or three numbers you will read, and what result would make you stop the work or widen the scope.
Bottom Line: A quarter with no access check and no agreed review date is not a programme. It is a standing order.

BENCHMARK BRIEFING 3 OF 4

What Have the Platforms Published, and When?

IN BRIEFA short timeline explains the whole asymmetry: Google has shipped both guidance and a reporting surface, while OpenAI has shipped access controls and a caution. Reading it in order is the fastest way to sanity-check any AI visibility tracking tool you are being sold.

Platform Publications, 2024–2026
Timeline of what OpenAI and Google published for site owners between 2024 and 2026, and what each publication gave them.
When Platform What shipped What site owners got
Oct 2024 OpenAI ChatGPT search launched with linked sources An opt-in crawler setting
Dec 2024 – Feb 2025 OpenAI Search widened to all users, then logged-out users A larger audience, same controls
May 2026 Google Official generative AI optimisation guide Named best practices and a mythbusting list
Jun 2026 Google Generative AI performance reports in Search Console First-party impression data, rolling out

Aggregated by IZI Digital Marketing from OpenAI and Google Search Central publications, 2024–2026. Licence.

The dates are checkable. OpenAI’s ChatGPT search announcement carries its October 2024 date and the later rollout updates, while Google’s announcement of generative AI performance reports sets the June 2026 marker. Google’s guide also warns against third-party tools claiming access to internal metrics, and points owners to its guidance on evaluating third-party SEO advice.

PART 5 · DRIVE

How Do You Tell If the Work Is Paying?

IN BRIEFRead three numbers you can pull yourself: referrals from ChatGPT in analytics, crawler hits and response codes in server logs, and enquiries where the buyer names an AI assistant. That discipline is the same one behind measuring SEO ROI month by month.

There is no equivalent of Search Console for ChatGPT, so a vendor’s dashboard is a modelled estimate rather than a platform read. That does not make estimates useless. It makes them commentary, and commentary should never be the only evidence on a renewal decision.

  • Referral sessions from ChatGPT. Small at first and easy to segment. Watch the trend and the pages, not the raw count.
  • Crawler hits in your own logs. Prove OAI-SearchBot is arriving and getting 200 responses. This is the only measurement in the category with a hard yes or no.
  • Enquiries that name the source. Add one optional field to your contact form asking where the buyer heard of you. In Malaysia, where WhatsApp often carries the first message, ask it in the reply instead.
Consultant’s Note: Ask for read-only access to your own analytics and log tooling on day one, not month six. Agencies that resist are rarely hiding bad results — usually they are protecting a reporting layer that would look thin beside the raw data. Either way you learn something useful for free.
Bottom Line: If you cannot reproduce a number in your own account, treat it as an opinion with a chart attached.

Where Should a Monthly Fee Actually Go?

IN BRIEFSixteen working hours a month, weighted heavily towards content because that is the only lever with real headroom. Ask any vendor to complete this table for their own retainer — the shape of the answer says more than the price, as it does when weighing DIY against hiring a specialist.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can anyone guarantee my business appears in ChatGPT answers?

No, and OpenAI says so itself. Its help documentation states that ranking depends on a number of factors and that there is no way to guarantee top placement. What can be guaranteed is the access work: the crawler permission, the firewall check and the published IP ranges. Treat a placement guarantee as the clearest signal to walk away from a quote.

2. Do ChatGPT visibility services need llms.txt or special AI markup?

Not for Google, and not as a headline deliverable anywhere. Google states plainly that its Search systems ignore llms.txt and that no special markup is needed for generative AI features. Some non-Google services do read such files, so keeping one is harmless housekeeping. It should never carry a meaningful share of a monthly fee.

3. Should ChatGPT visibility services be a separate retainer from my SEO?

Usually no. It depends on whether your current agency already handles crawler access, secondary indexes and content properly, because the overlap is close to total. Google frames optimising for generative AI search as still being SEO. Paying two retainers for the same underlying work is the most common way Malaysian businesses overspend here.

4. How long before ChatGPT visibility services show any result?

Weeks for access, months for citation. A robots.txt change takes roughly a day for OpenAI’s systems to register, so the access half is fast. Being chosen as a source depends on publishing pages worth quoting and on other sites referencing you, which moves on a quarterly rhythm. Anyone promising visible movement in two weeks is describing the access fix alone.

5. What is the cheapest useful version of ChatGPT visibility services?

A one-off access audit with a written handover. It checks robots.txt, confirms in your server logs that OAI-SearchBot is arriving and being served, verifies your presence in secondary indexes, and records a baseline you keep. For many Malaysian SMEs that audit either resolves the problem outright or proves the real gap is content, which is a different purchase.
