Put the YouTube Ads vs TikTok Ads question to most people and you get the same two sentences back. TikTok is where the young audience is. YouTube is where everybody else is. Run both, watch the numbers, optimise.
That is a description, not a decision. A Malaysian brand with RM 4,000 a month, one founder who does not enjoy being filmed and no editor on payroll cannot act on it. Worse, the demographic split it rests on has largely closed. The Department of Statistics Malaysia found that 99.7 per cent of Malaysian internet users take part in social networks such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. Household internet access sits at 96.8 per cent. Both platforms can reach your customer. Neither can film for you.
The useful difference sits somewhere less flattering to both: in how each one bills, and in how long a single video keeps earning before the platform quietly stops showing it. Before that gets unpacked, here is Google’s own walkthrough of how its video view campaigns are built.

PART 1 · DIAGNOSE
Why “Which One Is Cheaper” Cannot Be Answered
IN BRIEFThe two platforms charge for different amounts of attention, so their cost-per-view figures are not comparable. Google can bill after thirty seconds of watching; TikTok can bill after six. Our YouTube Ads consulting starts by fixing the unit before anyone argues about the rate.
Both companies publish exactly what triggers a charge. Read the two documents together and the usual price argument stops making sense.
- YouTube bills at thirty seconds on skippable in-stream — a view is counted when someone watches thirty seconds, the full ad if it is shorter, or interacts with it, according to Google’s documentation on cost-per-view bidding. Viewers can skip after five seconds and you pay nothing.
- YouTube Shorts and in-feed bill at ten seconds — the same document counts a Shorts view at ten seconds of watching or a call-to-action click. An in-feed view needs a thumbnail click or ten seconds of autoplay.
- TikTok bills at six seconds on its default video buy — a focused view is counted when someone watches at least six seconds, or finishes a shorter creative. An interaction inside the first six seconds also counts, per the TikTok Business Help Centre on the video views objective.
- TikTok also sells a stricter fifteen-second option — the same page documents a 15s focused view, plus a completion toggle for creatives of sixteen to sixty seconds that bills only on a full watch.
So a RM 0.04 view on TikTok and a RM 0.12 view on YouTube are not the same product at two prices. One is six seconds of screen time. The other is half a minute somebody chose not to skip.
PART 2 · DIAGNOSE
The Shelf Life of a Video Is the Real Cost
IN BRIEFA YouTube asset ages slowly because uninterested viewers skip before billing. A TikTok asset ages fast because the platform caps repeat exposure and the feed punishes anything that looks like a television advert. Budget for the editing time, not just the media spend, and pick your editing tools for ad creative before you open an ad account.
TikTok publishes the constraint plainly: ad groups optimising for focused view are capped at showing your ad seven times per person per seven days. That cap is sensible for the viewer and expensive for the advertiser, because it means reach on a single asset runs out on a schedule rather than tapering.
YouTube has no equivalent problem on its cost-per-view formats. The skip button does the filtering for free. A viewer who is not interested leaves at five seconds, costs you nothing, and the same thirty-second explainer keeps finding new people for months.
Run the honest audit before choosing. How many finished videos did your business publish in the last three months? Not filmed. Not planned. Published and live. For most Malaysian SMEs the answer is between zero and three, and that number rules out one of these platforms before any budget conversation starts.

BENCHMARK BRIEFING 1 OF 4
What Counts as a Paid View on YouTube and TikTok?
IN BRIEFSix separate definitions sit behind the phrase “video view” across these two platforms, from a served impression to a full completed watch. The table places them side by side, and it explains the same unit mismatch that distorts the YouTube and Facebook video comparison.
| Buy | What triggers the charge | Attention bought |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube skippable in-stream (CPV) | 30 seconds watched, the full ad if shorter, or an interaction | 30 seconds |
| YouTube Shorts ads (CPV) | 10 seconds watched, or a call-to-action click | 10 seconds |
| YouTube in-feed video (CPV) | A thumbnail click, or 10 seconds of autoplay | A deliberate click |
| YouTube bumper and non-skippable | An impression served, under target CPM bidding | None guaranteed |
| TikTok 6s focused view | 6 seconds watched, a shorter creative completed, or an interaction inside 6 seconds | 6 seconds |
| TikTok 15s focused view | 15 seconds watched, a shorter creative completed, or an interaction inside 15 seconds | 15 seconds |

PART 3 · DESIGN
When YouTube Ads Are the Right First Buy
IN BRIEFBuy YouTube when the sale needs explaining, when people already search for what you sell, and when you have one strong video rather than a content habit. Those same conditions shape what to expect before briefing a Malaysian YouTube Ads specialist.
Three situations tilt clearly towards Google, and they share one trait: the viewer has already agreed to sit still.
- Purchases that need a demonstration — aesthetic clinics, tuition centres, machinery, renovation, professional services. The buyer wants to see the process before enquiring, and skippable formats let disinterested viewers leave before you are charged.
- Categories people search before buying — YouTube sits inside the same account and audience system as Google Search, so video can follow search behaviour that already shows intent.
- Brands with one good video and no studio — a single thirty-second explainer can run for a quarter. Patient creative is not punished, because weak matches cost nothing.
There is a limitation worth naming rather than hiding. YouTube rarely produces enquiries in week one. Viewers watch, leave, and come back days later through search or your website, so the first fortnight looks like waste to anyone reading last-click reports.

How Many Seconds Is Each Buy Actually Priced Around?
IN BRIEFThe cliché says TikTok buys glances and YouTube buys attention. The published billing rules say otherwise: TikTok’s completion option asks for more watched seconds than any YouTube format. Ask any shortlisted agency to explain this table, and you have a fast way to vet a video ads agency.

|---|---|---|
| TikTok 6s focused view |

PART 4 · DESIGN
When TikTok Ads Win Instead
IN BRIEFChoose TikTok when nobody is searching for your category yet, when the purchase is quick and visual, and when someone in the business is willing to be on camera weekly. If neither is true, the honest question becomes whether video advertising is worth it at all yet.
TikTok’s advantage is not cheaper attention. It is that TikTok shows your video to people who were not looking for you, in a format they do not experience as advertising. For a brand with no search demand, that is the only route available.
- New or unfamiliar offers — a product Malaysians do not yet type into Google cannot be captured, only created. The feed is the cheapest place to manufacture that first awareness.
- Quick, visual, low-consideration purchases — food, fashion, beauty, gifting, events. A six-second watch followed by a tap to the profile is a realistic path to a sale, so short billing windows are not a weakness.
- Businesses already filming weekly — if you shoot content anyway, the expensive input is paid for. The ad account simply pays to widen what already exists.
- Products that demonstrate in one shot — anything where the before and after is visible in a few seconds needs no script, no voice-over and no studio.

How Much New Video Does Each Platform Burn in Six Months?
IN BRIEFOver half a year the gap in creative demand is roughly eightfold, and it compounds rather than levelling off. That is a production plan, not a media plan, which is why it belongs in the same conversation as your content marketing programme rather than the ad budget.
| Measure | M1 | M2 | M3 | M4 | M5 | M6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| New YouTube assets | 2 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 |
| New TikTok assets | 6 | 6 | 6 | 8 | 8 | 8 |
| Cumulative YouTube | 2 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
| Cumulative TikTok | 6 | 12 | 18 | 26 | 34 | 42 |

PART 5 · DEPLOY
How to Test Both Without Wasting a Quarter
IN BRIEFRun the two platforms in sequence, not side by side, and compare qualifying enquiries rather than views. Splitting a small budget across both at once produces two underfed campaigns and one unreadable result, which is also why paid search budgets are better concentrated than spread.
- Fix the outcome metric first. Pick one action with commercial meaning: a WhatsApp enquiry, a booked appointment, a completed checkout. Views, reach and engagement are not outcomes and must not decide this.
- Make one vertical video that works on both. Put the message in the first five seconds, caption it, and keep it under thirty seconds. One asset used twice removes creative quality as a variable.
- Run the first platform alone for eight weeks. Give it the full budget and change nothing after week two. Record total spend and total qualifying enquiries.
- Swap platforms with the same budget and video. Hold the landing page, offer and reply speed identical, because anything else you change becomes the thing you accidentally tested.
- Compare cost per enquiry, then check quality. Divide spend by qualifying enquiries on each side. If the cheaper platform’s enquiries close at half the rate, the cheaper number is the wrong winner.

What Does RM 1,000 Buy in Seconds of Attention?
IN BRIEFConverting each buy into total seconds bought reverses the usual ranking: the cheapest unit delivers the least attention per ringgit. Swap the rate column for your own account figures and the arithmetic becomes a real decision, which is exactly how paid social budgets should be compared too.
| Buy | Assumed rate per billable event (RM) | Seconds per event | Events per RM 1,000 | Seconds bought |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube skippable in-stream | 0.10 | 30 | 10,000 | 300,000 |
| YouTube Shorts | 0.05 | 10 | 20,000 | 200,000 |
| TikTok 15s focused view | 0.09 | 15 | 11,100 | 166,500 |
| TikTok 6s focused view | 0.04 | 6 | 25,000 | 150,000 |

PART 6 · DRIVE
Choosing Between YouTube Ads and TikTok Ads
IN BRIEFThe YouTube Ads vs TikTok Ads decision comes down to two questions: does search demand for your category already exist, and can someone film weekly? If both answers are no, organic search is usually the cheaper first investment, and our Malaysian SEO agency shortlist is the better starting point.
DECISION BOX · WHICH VIDEO PLATFORM TO BUY FIRST
| Option | Best fit | Creative demand | Time to a readable result |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Ads | Explained, researched purchases | Low — about 1 asset a quarter | 8–12 weeks |
| TikTok Ads | New demand, quick visual purchases | High — 6 or more a month | 4–6 weeks |
| Neither yet | No video habit, untracked website | Foundations first | One quarter |
Verdict: Choose YouTube if people already search for what you sell and you can commission one strong video per quarter. Choose TikTok if demand has to be created and someone will film most weeks. If you have neither search demand nor a filming habit, fix tracking and the website first — paid video only scales what already converts.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Are TikTok Ads cheaper than YouTube Ads in Malaysia?
On headline cost per view, usually yes, and the figure misleads. It depends on the unit: TikTok can bill after six seconds of watching while YouTube’s main in-stream format bills after thirty. Compare cost per qualifying enquiry across a full month and the gap often closes or reverses entirely.
2. Do I need to appear on camera to advertise on TikTok?
Not strictly, but you need a face or a pair of hands doing something. It depends on the product: anything with a visible before and after can carry the ad on its own. Polished corporate video transplanted from YouTube consistently underperforms in the feed, so plan for native footage rather than reruns.
3. Can I run the same video on both platforms?
Yes, and for a first test you should. It depends on the edit: shoot vertical, put the message in the first five seconds, add captions, and one asset serves both. Holding the creative identical is what makes the platform comparison mean anything at all.
4. Which platform suits a Malaysian B2B or professional services business?
YouTube, in most cases. It depends on whether buyers research before enquiring — for legal, accounting, engineering and clinical services they almost always do, and a thirty-second explainer answers the questions a proposal meeting would. TikTok can still work for recruitment and employer branding in the same firms.
5. How long before I can tell which platform is working?
Roughly four to six weeks on TikTok and eight to twelve on YouTube. It depends on enquiry volume: a business receiving five enquiries a month needs a longer window than one receiving fifty. Judging YouTube at week two, when viewers have watched but not yet returned, is the most common premature verdict.
THE VERDICT
The Question Worth Asking Instead
“YouTube Ads vs TikTok Ads” assumes both platforms sell the same thing at different prices. They do not. One sells patience from people who chose not to skip. The other sells a few seconds of interruption, repeatedly, on the condition that you keep supplying new footage. Both will bill you cheerfully while you work out which you needed.
So put the platform question down and answer two smaller ones honestly. Do Malaysians already search for what you sell? Will someone in your business film most weeks for the next six months? Those two answers pick the platform faster than any benchmark table, including the four above.
