Two good channels, one budget
Most Malaysian SMEs cannot fund Google Ads and Meta Ads properly at the same time, at least not at the start. Splitting a modest budget across both usually means neither gets enough data to perform. The better question is not which platform is superior, it is which one matches how your customers buy.
The difference in one sentence
Google Ads reaches people who are already searching for what you sell. Meta Ads reaches people on Facebook and Instagram before they think to search. One captures demand; the other creates it.
When Google Ads should come first
If people actively search for your product or service, “plumber Subang Jaya”, “confinement centre PJ”, “ISO consultant Malaysia”, Google Ads is usually the faster, safer first ringgit. You are paying to appear at the exact moment of intent.
- Speed: first leads typically arrive within a week or two of launch.
- Cost: search clicks in Malaysia generally run from around RM1.50 to RM8, depending on industry.
- Fit: services, B2B, urgent needs, and anything people research before buying.
The trade-off is that search volume caps your growth. Once you are capturing most of the existing searches, spending more does not create more demand.
When Meta Ads should come first
If your product is visual, impulse-friendly, or something nobody knows to search for yet, Meta is often the stronger opening move. Think fashion, F&B, home decor, beauty, events.
- Reach: typical CPMs in Malaysia sit around RM18, 35, so meaningful reach is affordable.
- Formats: Reels, Stories, click-to-WhatsApp campaigns, well suited to a WhatsApp-first market.
- Fit: consumer products with strong visuals, retargeting website visitors, building awareness for a new brand.
The trade-off is creative appetite. Meta rewards fresh material, so plan for several new ad variations every week or two. And without proper Pixel and Conversions API setup, a large share of your results simply goes unrecorded.
A simple decision rule
- People search for what you sell, and each customer is worth a few hundred ringgit or more start with Google Ads.
- Your product sells on sight and price, and your Instagram content already gets engagement start with Meta Ads.
- Your website loads slowly or does not convert visitors fix the website first. Both platforms only amplify what your site already does.
Whichever you choose, do these three things
- Set up conversion tracking before spending a single ringgit. In audits, missing or broken tracking is the most common source of wasted budget we see.
- Commit for at least three months. Both platforms need weeks of data before costs stabilise, expect steadier cost per lead around week six to eight.
- Keep your agency fee and your ad spend separate and visible, so you always know what each ringgit produced.
Eventually, you want both
Mature accounts run the two together: Meta creates awareness, Google captures the searches that awareness generates, and retargeting closes the loop. Multi-channel programmes commonly bring cost per lead down by a third or more compared with a single channel. But that is a later chapter. Start where your customers already are, prove the numbers, then expand.
