Call Tracking: Measuring Phone Leads From Ads

The Short Answer: Call tracking connects each phone lead to the ad, keyword or campaign that produced it. In Malaysia, Google’s own forwarding numbers are not available, so call tracking here relies on click-based conversions, a click-to-call tag on your site, or a third-party tracking number. Pick the method by how much of your revenue starts with a phone call.

Many Malaysian service businesses get most of their best customers by phone. The aircon technician, the renovation contractor, the clinic, the tuition centre. Yet their Google Ads reports show only form fills. The calls happen, but the report never sees them.

That gap causes real damage. Campaigns that drive calls look like failures and get paused. Bidding systems learn from the few form leads and chase the wrong people. And the business owner has no way to tell whether the ad budget is working.

This guide from IZI Digital Marketing explains how call tracking works, what actually works in Malaysia, and how to decide which method fits your business. It supports our guide to choosing an SEM agency in Malaysia, because an agency that cannot measure your calls cannot manage your budget well. The walkthrough below shows the main phone conversion options inside Google Ads.

PART 1 · DIAGNOSE

Why Do Phone Leads Go Missing From Ad Reports?

IN BRIEFPhone leads go missing because a call happens outside the browser. Unless something records the tap or the call itself, Google Ads sees a click and nothing after it. Most accounts track forms first and calls never, so start by checking your Google Ads conversion tracking for any phone-based actions.

Malaysians search and call from the same device. The DOSM ICT Use and Access Survey 2024 puts mobile phone use by individuals at 99.5%. A searcher can see your ad, tap your number and be talking to your staff in under a minute. None of that shows up by default.

In practice, phone leads leak out of reports at four points:

  • The call button in the ad: a tap on a call asset is only counted if a phone conversion action exists and is set up correctly.
  • The number on your website: a visitor who clicks the ad, reads your page and then dials is invisible unless the page tracks the tap.
  • The number copied by hand: desktop visitors often dial from their phone, which breaks the link to the ad click completely.
  • The WhatsApp switch: many Malaysian customers message or call on WhatsApp instead, which standard tracking setups do not capture.

The result is a report that undercounts leads, sometimes badly. A campaign can look like it costs RM150 per lead when the true figure is closer to RM60.

Bottom Line: If your business takes bookings by phone and your ad report shows only forms, you are judging your campaigns on a fraction of their output.

Google Ads Call Tracking Methods Compared

IN BRIEFGoogle Ads offers five ways to track phone conversions. Three of them need Google forwarding numbers, which are not offered in Malaysia. That leaves two native options here: counting clicks on call ads and assets, and counting taps on the number on your website. How you set up your Google Ads assets decides which ones apply.

The Five Google Ads Phone Conversion Methods and Their Malaysian Availability
Five Google Ads phone conversion methods. Calls from ads: tracks calls from call-only ads and call or location assets; needs a Google forwarding number; measures the actual call and its length; not available in Malaysia. Calls to a phone number on your website: tracks calls to a forwarding number swapped onto your site; needs a Google forwarding number; measures the actual call; not available in Malaysia. Clicks on a number on your mobile website: tracks taps on a phone link; no forwarding number needed; measures the tap only; available in Malaysia. Clicks on call ads and assets: counts a click based on Google’s estimate that a meaningful call happened; no forwarding number needed; measures an estimated call; available in Malaysia. Import call conversions: imports calls tracked in a CRM; needs Google forwarding numbers; measures the outcome you choose; not available in Malaysia.
Method Needs Google forwarding number? What it actually measures Usable in Malaysia?
Calls from ads Yes The real call and its length No
Calls to a number on your website Yes The real call and its length No
Clicks on a number on your mobile website No The tap only, not whether the call connected Yes
Clicks on call ads and assets No A click Google estimates led to a meaningful call Yes
Import call conversions Yes The outcome you define, such as a sale No

Aggregated by IZI Digital Marketing from About phone call conversion tracking, Google Ads Help and the country list in Google forwarding number, Google Ads Help, checked September 2026. Availability can change; confirm in your account settings.

This is the detail most guides on the topic skip, because they are written for the US or UK. Google’s own help page states that tracking calls from ads, calls from a website and imported call conversions all require Google forwarding numbers. Malaysia is not on the list of countries where forwarding numbers are available. If an agency promises you call duration reports straight from Google Ads, ask how.

PART 2 · DIAGNOSE

Which Call Tracking Option Fits a Malaysian Business?

IN BRIEFChoose by how much revenue starts with a call. Free native tracking suits businesses where calls are a side channel. A third-party tracking number suits businesses where the phone is the main sales line. Whatever you pick, map it to your Google Ads account structure so calls can be traced to a campaign.

There are four realistic routes for a Malaysian advertiser. They differ in cost, effort and, most of all, in how close they get to the truth.

DECISION BOX · WHICH TRACKING ROUTE SHOULD YOU USE?

Route Best when Main weakness
Clicks on call assets (native) Most calls come straight from the ad on mobile Relies on Google’s estimate; no call length or caller detail
Website click-to-call tag (native) Visitors read your page first, then tap to call Counts taps, including hang-ups and wrong numbers
Third-party tracking numbers The phone is your main sales line and each lead is worth a lot Monthly tool cost; needs local numbers and careful setup
Manual source logging plus offline upload Low call volume and a disciplined front desk Depends on staff asking “how did you find us?” every time

Verdict: Start with both native options, which cost nothing. Move to third-party tracking numbers only when calls make up a large share of revenue and you need call length, recordings or outcomes.

A third-party platform works by showing a unique number to each ad visitor, often called dynamic number insertion. When that number rings, the platform knows which click it came from. Before signing up, confirm the provider can issue Malaysian local or mobile numbers; an overseas number on a Malaysian page hurts trust and answer rates.

Bottom Line: In Malaysia, “call tracking” means choosing between free estimates and paid precision. The right choice depends on what a single missed call costs you.

How Many Leads Go Uncounted Without Call Tracking?

IN BRIEFIn this model of a Klang Valley aircon servicing business, forms show only 38 leads a month. Phone and WhatsApp bring in 95 more enquiries that the report never sees. The channel mix matters here, as our comparison of WhatsApp ads versus lead forms explains.

Illustrative model by IZI Digital Marketing, 2026, built on the tracking limits described in Google Ads Help and a RM6,000 monthly media budget. Composite profile for teaching; not client data. Bar widths show enquiries out of 100.

The owner looking at forms alone would conclude the ads are expensive and cut the budget. In reality, about seven in ten enquiries arrived by phone or WhatsApp. Not every one of those is a genuine lead, which is why the next section matters. But the gap between RM158 and RM45 is too wide to ignore.

PART 3 · DESIGN

What Should Count as a Real Phone Lead?

IN BRIEFA real phone lead is a call long enough to be a genuine enquiry, from someone who could become a customer. Counting every tap inflates results and teaches bidding to find the wrong callers. Define the rule before you track anything, the same way you would when you fix junk leads from ads.

Where call length can be measured, Google’s phone call conversion documentation lets you set a minimum duration, with 60 seconds as the default. Calls shorter than that are logged as calls, not conversions. That default was designed for a general case, not for your business.

A useful definition of a phone lead answers three questions:

  • How long is a real enquiry? A quote request for a renovation takes longer than a clinic booking. Set the threshold from your own call logs.
  • Who should be excluded? Existing customers, suppliers, job seekers and sales calls to you are not leads, even when they last five minutes.
  • What happens next? A lead that books, gets quoted or buys is worth more than one that only asks about opening hours.
Consultant’s Note: When native tracking only counts taps, the number will always look better than reality. Before you let an automated bid strategy optimise for tap-to-call, spend two weeks having your front desk log every call and its outcome. Compare that log with the tap count. If taps run far ahead of real enquiries, keep tap-to-call as a secondary action and bid on forms or confirmed leads instead.
Bottom Line: Tracking more calls is only useful if you are counting the right calls. The definition comes first; the tool comes second.

BENCHMARK BRIEFING 3 OF 4

Call Length Thresholds by Business Type

IN BRIEFOne threshold does not fit every business. In this model, a clinic booking qualifies at around 45 seconds, while a renovation enquiry needs two minutes or more. Match the threshold to how long a genuine first call takes. Where calls are short, a strong landing page with clear Google Ads landing page must-haves does more of the qualifying.

Illustrative Minimum Call Length by Malaysian Business Type
Illustrative call length thresholds. Quick bookings group: dental or GP clinic, typical genuine first call 1 to 2 minutes, suggested minimum 45 seconds; salon or spa, 1 to 2 minutes, 45 seconds. Service call-outs group: aircon or plumbing, 2 to 3 minutes, 60 seconds; pest control, 2 to 4 minutes, 90 seconds. Considered purchases group: tuition or enrichment centre, 3 to 6 minutes, 120 seconds; renovation or interior design, 4 to 8 minutes, 150 seconds; B2B services, 5 to 10 minutes, 180 seconds.
Group Business type Typical genuine first call Suggested minimum
Quick bookings Dental or GP clinic 1–2 min 45 sec
Salon or spa 1–2 min 45 sec
Service call-outs Aircon or plumbing 2–3 min 60 sec
Pest control 2–4 min 90 sec
Considered purchases Tuition or enrichment centre 3–6 min 120 sec
Renovation or interior design 4–8 min 150 sec
B2B services 5–10 min 180 sec

Illustrative model by IZI Digital Marketing, 2026, built on the adjustable minimum call length (default 60 seconds) in Google Ads Help. Starting points for testing, not rules; calibrate against your own call logs.

These thresholds apply wherever call length is measured, which in Malaysia usually means a third-party tracking platform. If you only have native tap tracking, the table still helps. Ask your front desk what share of calls pass the suggested minimum. Then discount your tap count by that share.

PART 4 · DEPLOY

How to Set Up Call Tracking for Google Ads

IN BRIEFA clean setup takes six steps: audit what exists, add call assets, tag the website number, decide which actions are primary, protect your business listing and handle caller data properly. Most of it can be done in a day. If you would rather hand it off, compare a tracking setup service versus doing it yourself first.

  1. Audit existing conversion actions: list every action in the account, remove duplicates and note which ones already relate to calls.
  2. Add call assets to Search campaigns: use your real business number and set a schedule that matches the hours someone answers the phone.
  3. Tag the number on your website: make it a tappable link and track the tap as a conversion, ideally through Google Tag Manager.
  4. Set primary and secondary actions: keep tap-based actions as secondary until your call log proves they reflect real enquiries.
  5. Keep your number consistent: if you use a tracking number, keep your main number on your Google Business Profile and in the site footer so local listings stay consistent.
  6. Handle caller data carefully: if calls are recorded, tell callers at the start and cover it in your privacy notice, in line with the personal data protection principles set by JPDP.

Step two has one Malaysia-specific catch. Google advises that call reporting should be switched off where forwarding numbers are not available, so that call assets can serve normally. Check this setting before assuming your call button is live.

Bottom Line: Phone lead tracking fails more often from sloppy setup than from the wrong tool. Get the six basics right before paying for anything extra.

What Happens to Cost Per Lead Once Calls Are Tracked?

IN BRIEFIn this 12-week model, reported cost per lead falls sharply the week calls are tracked, simply because leads that already existed are finally counted. The real gain comes later, when budget shifts toward campaigns that drive qualified calls. That is also when auction insights on your ad competitors start to make more sense.

Illustrative 12-Week Cost Per Lead Before and After Call Tracking
Illustrative 12-week model on a RM1,500 weekly budget. Weeks 1 to 4, forms only: 10 reported leads per week, 0 qualified calls counted, reported cost per lead RM150. Weeks 5 to 6, call tracking live: 29 reported leads, 12 qualified calls, RM52. Weeks 7 to 8, secondary actions reviewed against call log: 26 reported leads, 14 qualified calls, RM58. Weeks 9 to 10, budget moved to call-heavy campaigns: 30 reported leads, 18 qualified calls, RM50. Weeks 11 to 12: 32 reported leads, 20 qualified calls, RM47.
Weeks Reported leads per week Qualified calls per week Reported cost per lead
1–4 (forms only) 10 0 counted RM150
5–6 (call tracking live) 29 12 RM52
7–8 (taps checked against call log) 26 14 RM58
9–10 (budget moved to call-heavy campaigns) 30 18 RM50
11–12 32 20 RM47

Illustrative model by IZI Digital Marketing, 2026, on a RM1,500 weekly media budget, built on the phone conversion options in Google Ads Help. Media cost only; directional, not client data.

Notice the small rise in weeks 7–8. That is the honest correction, not a setback. Once taps were checked against the call log, some were reclassified as non-leads. The figure that matters most is the steady climb in qualified calls, from none counted to 20 a week on the same budget.

PART 5 · DRIVE

What Should Your Agency Report About Phone Leads?

IN BRIEFA good agency reports calls separately from forms, explains which method counts them and says how that count compares with reality. If phone leads never appear in your report, ask why. Build these questions into your digital marketing RFP so every agency answers them before you sign.

You do not need to become a tracking expert. You need your agency to answer these questions clearly:

  • “Which call tracking method are we using, and why?” The answer should name the method and admit its limits, especially the Malaysian forwarding number gap.
  • “Are call actions primary or secondary?” Tap-based actions set as primary can mislead automated bidding if nobody has checked them against real calls.
  • “How do reported calls compare with our call log?” A monthly comparison, even a rough one, keeps the numbers honest.
  • “Which campaigns drive calls and which drive forms?” Different campaigns often produce different lead types, and budget should follow the more valuable one.
  • “How are WhatsApp enquiries counted?” In Malaysia, ignoring WhatsApp can hide a large share of leads.

For a wider view of what to expect from a search partner, our Google Ads management service page sets out how we approach measurement.

Bottom Line: An agency that is vague about how calls are counted is vague about your results. Clear answers here are a fair test of the whole relationship.

THE DECISION

So, Is Call Tracking Worth Setting Up?

If even a quarter of your enquiries arrive by phone, yes. Start with the two free native methods, define what a real phone lead is, and check the count against your own call log. Move to third-party tracking numbers when calls are your main sales line and you need call length, recordings or outcomes.

Whichever route you choose, it should sit inside a measurement plan your agency can explain. Our guide to choosing an SEM agency Malaysia businesses can hold to account shows what else to look for.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does Google Ads call tracking work in Malaysia?

Partly. It depends on the method; Google forwarding numbers are not offered in Malaysia, so calls from ads with call length cannot be measured natively. Clicks on call assets and taps on your website number can still be tracked as conversions.

2. What is the difference between a phone call and a call conversion?

A call is any call; a conversion is a call that meets your rules. It depends on your settings, but where call length is measured, only calls above the minimum duration count as conversions. Google’s default minimum is 60 seconds.

3. Do I need a third-party call tracking tool?

Not always. It depends on how much of your revenue starts with a call; native tracking is enough when calls are a side channel. A third-party tool makes sense when you need call length, recordings or sales outcomes linked to each ad click.

4. Will a tracking number hurt my local SEO?

It should not, if handled carefully. It depends on where the number appears; keep your main business number on your Google Business Profile and site footer, and use tracking numbers only for ad visitors or specific campaigns.

5. Can call tracking capture WhatsApp calls?

Usually not. It depends on your setup; standard call tracking covers normal phone calls, not WhatsApp. Track taps on your WhatsApp button as a separate conversion so these enquiries still appear in your reports.
