Branded vs Non-Branded Traffic: Read Reports Right

The Short Answer: Branded traffic comes from people who already know your name. Non-branded traffic comes from people searching for what you sell. SEO work is judged mainly on non-branded growth, because branded searches rise with ads, PR and word of mouth. Ask your agency to report the two separately, every month. A single “organic traffic” line can hide flat SEO results behind a strong brand.

An organic traffic chart that climbs every month looks like good news. It may not be. If most of those clicks come from people typing your company name into Google, the chart is measuring your reputation, not your SEO.

That is why branded vs non-branded traffic is the first split to check in any SEO report. The two groups behave differently, convert differently and respond to different kinds of work. Mix them together and you cannot tell whether your agency found you new customers or simply watched existing ones arrive.

This guide from IZI Digital Marketing shows you how to read the split, which number to hold your agency to, and how to set it up yourself. It supports our wider guide to hiring an SEO agency in Malaysia, where reporting quality is one of the clearest signs of a good partner. In the video below, Google’s Search Advocate walks through the Search Console performance reports that hold this data.

PART 1 · DIAGNOSE

What Is Branded vs Non-Branded Traffic?

IN BRIEFBranded traffic is search traffic from queries that include your business name, a misspelling of it, or a product only you sell. Non-branded traffic is everything else, such as “accountant in Petaling Jaya”. Our guide to what agency marketing reports should show explains where this split belongs.

The difference sounds simple, but the edges get blurry. Google’s own Search Console help page on query dimensions notes that some queries may be classified wrongly. Here is how most queries sort:

Query example Type What it tells you
Your business name + “contact number” Branded An existing or referred customer looking you up
A misspelling of your brand Branded Same intent, weaker spelling; still brand demand
Your business name + “vs” + a rival’s name Branded A buyer already comparing you at the final stage
“aircond servicing Shah Alam” Non-branded A new buyer who has not chosen a provider yet
“how to choose a wedding photographer” Non-branded An early-stage researcher your content can win over

Non-branded traffic is the part SEO actually creates. Branded traffic grows when people hear about you elsewhere. Good SEO still protects it, but it rarely causes it.

Bottom Line: Branded clicks measure how well known you are. Non-branded clicks measure how findable you are by people who have never heard of you.

BENCHMARK BRIEFING 1 OF 4

What Percentage of Organic Traffic Is Usually Branded?

IN BRIEFThere is no single healthy ratio. Established local brands often see most organic clicks come from branded queries, while new sites see almost none. Compare your share against your own business type and age, then track the trend. Our guide to setting marketing KPIs you can defend covers baselines.

Typical Branded Share of Organic Search Clicks by Business Profile
Illustrative typical branded share of organic search clicks for six business profiles in Malaysia. New website under one year old: 5 to 15 percent. Content-led B2B service firm: 20 to 35 percent. Single-outlet local business: 35 to 55 percent. Multi-outlet F&B or retail chain: 55 to 75 percent. Well-known e-commerce brand: 60 to 80 percent. Household-name brand with heavy offline advertising: 75 to 90 percent.
Business profile Typical branded share of organic clicks What to watch
New website (under 1 year) 5–15% Non-branded impressions starting to appear
Content-led B2B service firm 20–35% Non-branded enquiries, not just blog visits
Single-outlet local business 35–55% “Near me” and area-based queries
Multi-outlet F&B or retail chain 55–75% Category queries per outlet location
Well-known e-commerce brand 60–80% Product-category rankings
Household name with heavy offline ads 75–90% Whether SEO adds anything beyond brand demand

Illustrative model by IZI Digital Marketing, 2026, built on the branded and non-branded query definitions in Google Search Console Help. Planning ranges, not measured client data. Rust marks the profile where total organic traffic says least about SEO.

The bottom row is the one to worry about. When branded clicks make up most of your organic traffic, total traffic says very little about SEO. A 20% rise in total clicks could come entirely from a new TV slot. If you run paid search too, our guide on whether to bid on your own brand name explains how brand ads change these numbers.

PART 2 · DESIGN

Why Does Branded Traffic Inflate SEO Reports?

IN BRIEFBranded queries rank near position one, earn high click-through rates and convert well, so they lift every blended metric. An agency can report rising clicks, better average position and more conversions without winning a single new keyword. Our guide to measuring SEO ROI month by month shows the fix.

Most blended SEO reports are not dishonest. They are just built on the default view. But the default view flatters in three predictable ways:

  • Average position looks better than it is. Your brand name almost always ranks first, so it pulls the site-wide average up even when your category pages sit on page two.
  • Clicks follow seasons you did not create. Festive promotions, a viral post or a new outlet opening raise branded searches, and the SEO report takes the credit.
  • Conversions skew towards people who already chose you. Someone searching your name is often ready to buy. Counting that sale as an SEO win overstates what the agency added.

So the choice is which number you judge the agency on. Use this box before you sign or renew:

DECISION BOX · WHICH NUMBER SHOULD YOU HOLD YOUR SEO AGENCY TO?

Metric Use it for Hold the agency to it?
Total organic clicks Overall health check No, too mixed with brand demand
Non-branded clicks and impressions Measuring new reach Yes, the core SEO number
Non-branded enquiries or sales Measuring business value Yes, once tracking is reliable
Branded CTR and position Protecting your name in results Only as a guardrail, not a growth target
Site-wide average position Rarely useful No, brand terms distort it

Verdict: Judge SEO growth on non-branded clicks and non-branded enquiries. Watch branded performance as a guardrail so nothing breaks, but never let it carry the growth story.

Consultant’s Note: Watch for agencies that offer pay-for-results terms on “organic traffic” without saying which kind. If branded clicks count, you may pay for customers your brand already earned. It is one of the traps we cover in our review of performance-based SEO.
Bottom Line: A blended report is not wrong, just unfinished. Ask for the split and the real SEO story usually becomes clear within one page.

Do Branded Keywords Convert Better Than Non-Branded?

IN BRIEFUsually yes, by a wide margin, because branded searchers have already chosen you. That gap is exactly why the two groups must be read separately. Our breakdown of the GA4 metrics that matter explains how to track conversions per segment.

Branded vs Non-Branded Organic Queries: Position, CTR and Conversion Rate Compared
Illustrative comparison of branded and non-branded organic queries for a typical Malaysian service business. Average position: branded 1.3, non-branded 14. Click-through rate: branded 45 percent, non-branded 3 percent. Enquiry conversion rate: branded 8 percent, non-branded 2.5 percent.
Metric Branded (ink) vs non-branded (rust) Values
Click-through rate
45% vs 3%
Enquiry conversion rate
8% vs 2.5%
Average position (lower is better)
1.3 vs 14

Illustrative model by IZI Digital Marketing, 2026, for a typical Malaysian service business, built on the click, CTR and position definitions in the Search Console Performance report documentation. Planning figures, not measured client data.

Now picture a report that blends these. A small rise in branded clicks can outweigh a large fall in non-branded clicks on every headline metric. The blended conversion rate goes up while new-customer discovery shrinks. That is why “conversions from organic” without a brand split is the easiest number to misread.

PART 3 · DEPLOY

How Do You Filter Branded Queries in Search Console?

IN BRIEFUse the built-in branded queries filter in the Search Console Performance report if your site qualifies. If it does not, build your own brand filter from a list of name variants. Either way, keep the same definition every month. Our SEO services page shows how reporting fits the wider work.

Google introduced a branded queries filter in Search Console, and its help documentation says the filter holds data from March 2025 onwards but is not available for sites with low impressions. Follow these steps either way:

  1. Open the Performance report: go to Search results in Search Console and set the date range to the last 16 months, so seasonality shows.
  2. Apply the brand filter: add a query filter and choose branded or non-branded if the option appears for your property.
  3. Build a manual list if needed: write down your brand name, common misspellings, spaced and unspaced versions, Malay or Chinese spellings, and product names only you use.
  4. Filter with a custom regex: use a “custom (regex)” query filter containing your list, then flip it to “doesn’t match” to see non-branded queries.
  5. Compare clicks, impressions and CTR: record both groups side by side for the same months, not just the latest one.
  6. Carry the split into GA4: tag landing pages that mostly receive branded traffic, such as the homepage and contact page, so enquiries can be read per segment.

One catch matters for small sites. The help page notes that anonymised queries drop out of the totals once a query filter is applied. So branded plus non-branded may not add up to your total clicks. That is normal. Just compare like with like each month. If you also track AI assistants, our guide to measuring traffic from ChatGPT and AI covers that separate channel.

Bottom Line: The exact brand definition matters less than using the same one every month. A shifting definition makes any trend meaningless.

How Should Branded Share Change as SEO Works?

IN BRIEFWhen SEO works, non-branded clicks grow faster than branded ones, so the branded share usually falls even while branded clicks hold steady. A falling branded share is often good news. Our guide to how long SEO takes sets realistic timing.

Monthly Organic Clicks and Branded Share Over 12 Months of Non-Branded SEO Work
Illustrative monthly organic clicks for a local service business over 12 months of non-branded SEO work. Month 0: 600 branded, 400 non-branded, branded share 60 percent. Month 3: 610 branded, 480 non-branded, 56 percent. Month 6: 630 branded, 750 non-branded, 46 percent. Month 9: 660 branded, 1,050 non-branded, 39 percent. Month 12: 690 branded, 1,400 non-branded, 33 percent.
Month Branded clicks Non-branded clicks Branded share
Month 0 (baseline) 600 400 60%
Month 3 610 480 56%
Month 6 630 750 46%
Month 9 660 1,050 39%
Month 12 690 1,400 33%

Illustrative model by IZI Digital Marketing, 2026, for a single-outlet local service business with steady brand activity. Planning figures, not measured client data.

Two things stand out. Branded clicks barely move, because nothing about the brand changed. Meanwhile non-branded clicks more than triple, and the branded share drops from 60% to 33%. If your agency only reported total clicks, you would see steady growth but miss where it came from.

What Can a 30% Rise in Organic Traffic Really Mean?

IN BRIEFThe same headline growth can tell three very different stories, depending on how much came from branded demand. Always ask what share of the gain was non-branded before judging the agency. Our checklist of monthly SEO deliverables shows what should sit behind the number.

Source of a 30% Organic Click Increase: Three Scenarios
Illustrative split of a 30 percent rise in organic clicks across three scenarios. Scenario A, brand campaign effect: 90 percent of the gain from branded queries, 10 percent from non-branded. Scenario B, mixed growth: 50 percent branded, 50 percent non-branded. Scenario C, SEO-led growth: 15 percent branded, 85 percent non-branded.
Scenario Share of the gain (ink = branded, rust = non-branded) Branded / Non-branded
A: Brand campaign effect
90% / 10%
B: Mixed growth
50% / 50%
C: SEO-led growth
15% / 85%

Illustrative model by IZI Digital Marketing, 2026. Three planning scenarios showing how one headline figure can hide different sources of growth. Not measured client data.

Scenario A is common after a festive campaign or media coverage. The SEO report looks strong, yet the agency may have added almost nothing. Scenario C is the one you are paying an SEO agency for. When you shortlist, ask each agency to show a past report with this split. Our guide to writing a digital marketing RFP shows how to make that a formal requirement.

PART 4 · DRIVE

What Should a Monthly SEO Report Show About Brand?

IN BRIEFA good monthly report puts non-branded results first, shows branded results as a guardrail, and explains any big swing in either. It also states the brand definition used. See our guide to choosing an SEO agency for other reporting standards to expect.

Use this as a checklist when you review the next report:

  • Non-branded clicks and impressions, month on month and year on year. Year on year matters in Malaysia, where Raya, Chinese New Year and year-end sales shift demand.
  • Non-branded enquiries or sales. Traffic without leads is only half a result, so the report should connect the two.
  • Top non-branded queries gained and lost. This shows which pages are winning new ground.
  • Branded CTR and any rivals appearing on your name. A drop can signal competitor ads, bad reviews or a missing Google Business Profile.
  • A written note on outside events. TV, PR, promotions or a new outlet should be flagged so nobody claims or blames SEO for them.

Sector matters too. A clinic or law firm with a strong referral base will always look brand-heavy, which is one reason niche SEO agencies with industry focus often set different targets. And if the non-branded line stays flat because pages cannot be crawled, the fix may sit with your developer, as our guide to technical SEO implementation explains.

Bottom Line: If the first chart in your SEO report is total organic traffic, ask for it to be replaced with non-branded traffic.

THE VERDICT

Read the Split Before You Read the Trend

The branded vs non-branded traffic split decides whether your SEO report tells you anything at all. Branded clicks tell you how well known you are. Non-branded clicks tell you whether SEO is bringing in people who did not know you yet. Judge your agency on the second, protect the first, and insist on the same brand definition every month.

If you are comparing agencies now, ask each one how it reports this split before you sign. Our guide to hiring an SEO agency Malaysia businesses can trust lists the other questions worth asking.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between branded and non-branded traffic?

Branded traffic comes from searches that include your business name. It depends on how you define your brand terms, but misspellings and unique product names usually count as branded. Non-branded traffic comes from searches for your services or topics without your name.

2. Is a high percentage of branded traffic bad?

Not by itself. It depends on your business type and age. Well-known brands naturally see a high share, but if non-branded clicks are flat underneath it, your SEO is not reaching new customers.

3. How do I see branded queries in Google Search Console?

Use the branded queries filter in the Performance report. It depends on your site’s impression volume, since smaller sites may not get the filter. In that case, use a custom regex query filter listing your brand name and its variants.

4. Should my SEO agency report branded and non-branded traffic separately?

Yes, every month. It depends slightly on your goals, but non-branded clicks and enquiries are the clearest measure of SEO work. A report that only shows total organic traffic can hide flat results behind brand demand.

5. Why does branded traffic convert better than non-branded traffic?

Because branded searchers have usually already chosen you. It depends on the query, since “brand reviews” converts less than “brand contact”. Non-branded visitors are earlier in their decision, so they need more convincing before they enquire.
