Ask five Malaysian agencies what answer engine optimisation is and you will get five answers, three acronyms, and at least one quotation. That is not because the topic is complicated. It is because the term arrived before the definition did, which left a gap that marketing filled.
The underlying shift is real enough. A growing share of searches now end with a written answer rather than a page of links, and a business that gets quoted inside that answer is in a different position from one that does not. Google reports AI Overviews reaching more than 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode passing one billion. Those are not niche surfaces.
What is disputed is whether any of this needs a separate budget line, a separate specialist, or a separate strategy. This piece separates the part of AEO that is genuinely new work from the part that is SEO wearing a fresh label, so you can price a proposal properly before you sign it. The video below is Google’s own quarterly update on how these surfaces now report back to site owners.

PART 1 · DIAGNOSE
What Answer Engine Optimisation Actually Means
IN BRIEFAnswer engine optimisation is the practice of structuring content so a search surface can lift a complete, correct answer straight from your page and credit you for it. Google’s own position is that no separate optimisation exists for its AI features, which is why we treat it inside ordinary SEO services rather than as a product beside them.
An answer engine is any surface that responds with a composed answer instead of a ranked list. Featured snippets have done this since 2014. People Also Ask does it. Voice assistants do it. AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity do it at much larger scale, and with much less predictable sourcing.
The commercial change is what happens to the click. On a blue-link result, ranking well and getting the visit are close to the same event. On an answer surface they separate. Your page can shape the answer a hundred people read while ten of them visit you, which is worth having, but is not the same asset, and cannot be measured the same way.
DECISION BOX · SHOULD AEO BE ITS OWN BUDGET LINE?
| Your situation | Fund it separately | Fold it into SEO |
|---|---|---|
| You have no SEO programme yet | Never | Always, the base work comes first |
| You rank well but get few clicks | A one-off content project, yes | Not as an open-ended retainer |
| Your facts differ across the web | Yes, a cleanup has a clear end | Only if the listings are already tidy |
| You are sold a monthly AEO retainer | Only against named deliverables | Usually, ask what differs from SEO |
Verdict: AEO earns a separate line when it is a project with a finish line, a content rewrite, a facts cleanup, a schema pass. It rarely earns one as a permanent monthly fee, because the ongoing work is indistinguishable from the SEO you are already paying for.

Where Answers Get Served and What Each Surface Pulls From
IN BRIEF“Answer engine” covers at least six different surfaces, and they do not share a source, a control, or a report. Knowing which one you are actually chasing changes the work and the price, the same discipline of naming the specific problem before buying a fix that runs through our SEO audit checklist.
| Surface | What it pulls from | Direct control | First-party measurement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Featured snippet | A single ranking page | Opt out only, via nosnippet | Search Console performance |
| People Also Ask | Many ranking pages | None | Blended into normal results |
| AI Overviews | The Search index, via grounding | Include or exclude setting | Generative AI performance report |
| AI Mode | The Search index, query fan-out | Same setting as AI Overviews | Generative AI performance report |
| Voice assistants | Snippets and structured data | Indirect, through markup | Very limited |
| Third-party AI chat | Training data plus live retrieval | Crawler controls only | Referral traffic in analytics |

PART 2 · DIAGNOSE
The Part of AEO That Is Genuinely New
IN BRIEFThree things actually changed: answers must survive being read out of context, your facts must agree with themselves everywhere they appear, and success now shows up as influence you cannot fully count. Everything else on a typical AEO proposal is standard practice, including the eligibility chain we set out in getting your brand cited in AI Overviews.
Strip the marketing away and a short list remains. These are the changes worth paying for:
- Answers must stand alone. A paragraph that begins “as mentioned above” cannot be lifted. Every answer needs its own subject, its own context, and no dependence on the sentence before it.
- Facts must agree across the web. Answer engines assemble from several sources. If your opening hours, service list or company name differ between your site, your Business Profile and your directory listings, the model resolves the conflict, often not in your favour.
- Entities matter more than phrases. These systems match meaning, not strings. Naming your services, locations and qualifications plainly beats repeating a keyword.
- Measurement moved. Impressions without clicks used to look like failure. On an answer surface it can mean the answer was complete, which is a content signal rather than a technical fault.

Which Page Formats Get Lifted Into Answers
IN BRIEFExtraction favours shapes that already look like answers, direct definitions, short steps, comparison tables. Long unbroken prose is the hardest thing to quote, which is why formatting is doing quiet strategic work on every page across the IZI site.
| Content shape | Relative ease of extraction | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Direct definition, 40–60 words | 9.6 | Complete on its own, right length |
| Question heading plus short answer | 9.1 | Matches the query shape exactly |
| Numbered steps | 8.4 | Order is explicit, boundaries are clear |
| Comparison table | 7.8 | Labelled rows survive being summarised |
| Bulleted criteria list | 7.1 | Clean items, but context often implied |
| Narrative case story | 4.2 | Hard to quote, but hard to replicate |
| Long unbroken prose | 2.3 | No boundaries an extractor can trust |
Illustrative model by IZI Digital Marketing, built on the content and formatting guidance in Google Search Central’s generative AI optimisation guide and its featured snippets documentation. Scores are a planning illustration, not measured extraction rates.
Note the second-last row. Narrative case stories score badly on extraction and are still worth writing, because they are the material an engine cannot find anywhere else. A page needs both: a quotable opening and a body nobody can copy.
PART 3 · DESIGN
How to Write a Page That Can Be Quoted
IN BRIEFAnswer the question in the first sixty words, then earn the click with what follows. The rewrite is cheap, needs no tools, and is the same editing discipline any competent SEO company should already be applying to your service pages.
Work through your five most commercially important pages in this order:
- Put the verdict first. Open each page and each major section with a forty to sixty word answer that would make sense to someone who read nothing else.
- Make headings match real questions. Use the phrasing people type, not internal department names. “How much notice do I need to give?” beats “Terms”.
- Name your entities plainly. Write the full service name, the town, the qualification. Pronouns and clever synonyms are where clarity leaks.
- Add markup that describes what is there. Standard schema types from the supported structured data gallery, nothing invented for AI, because no such type exists.
- Then add what only you have. Real numbers, real trade-offs, the honest answer to who should not buy from you.
BENCHMARK BRIEFING 3 OF 4
AEO, GEO and SEO Compared Line by Line
IN BRIEFThe three terms describe overlapping work with different emphasis, not three disciplines. Laid side by side, the overlap is large enough that paying three retainers would mean buying the same hours repeatedly, a point worth raising with any digital marketing services provider quoting all three.
| Dimension | SEO | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface targeted | Ranked results | Snippets, PAA, voice | AI answers and chatbots |
| Unit of success | A position and a click | A quoted passage | A citation or a mention |
| Distinctive work | Crawling, links, relevance | Self-contained answers | Consistent facts everywhere |
| Main reporting source | Search Console | Search Console | Referrals plus sampling |
| Overlap with SEO | — | About 80% | About 75% |
Illustrative model by IZI Digital Marketing, built on Google Search Central’s stated position in its generative AI optimisation guide that optimising for generative AI features is still SEO, together with its AI features and your website documentation. Overlap percentages are a planning illustration, not measured figures.
PART 4 · DRIVE
Measuring Answer Visibility Without Guessing
IN BRIEFGoogle now reports generative AI performance directly in Search Console, which makes most paid visibility dashboards optional. Start with the free first-party data, then decide whether a tool adds anything, the sequencing we walk through in our published insights.
Four things are worth watching, in this order:
- Impressions in generative AI features, as a trend. Read the generative AI performance report over eight weeks, not eight days.
- Which pages carry them. Rarely the pages the business expected. That gap is the useful finding.
- Assisted conversions, not last click. An answer-influenced visitor often arrives later through a branded search, so last-click attribution will credit the wrong channel.
- What your sales team hears. Enquiries that open with the right vocabulary are the clearest evidence that an answer surface briefed the buyer before you did.

BENCHMARK BRIEFING 4 OF 4
A Four-Quarter AEO Rollout for a Malaysian SME
IN BRIEFSequenced properly, the free and cheap work lands in the first six months and the expensive work only starts once you can see whether it is needed. That order protects the budget of a smaller firm more than any single tactic does.
| Quarter | Focus | Cost profile | Evidence by quarter end |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 | One source of truth for name, address, hours, services | Free, internal time only | Every property carries identical facts |
| Q2 | Rewrite the top five pages answer-first, add standard schema | Low to moderate, a project fee | Five pages opening with a liftable answer |
| Q3 | Read the reports, change nothing structural | Free, analysis time only | A baseline trend worth judging against |
| Q4 | Publish material only you can produce | The main spend of the year | Pages competitors cannot copy quickly |
Illustrative model by IZI Digital Marketing, built on the eligibility and content guidance in Google Search Central’s AI features and your website documentation and the reporting introduced in its generative AI performance reports announcement. Not measured results; competitive sectors take longer.
THE VERDICT
What We Would Do in Your Position
Spend the first quarter agreeing with yourself. Write your business facts down once, then make every property in the world match that page. It costs nothing, it takes an afternoon, and it removes the most common cause of an answer engine describing you wrongly.
Then rewrite five pages so each opens with a real answer, and leave the rest alone until the reports say something. Most businesses do this backwards, buying a tool, then a retainer, then wondering why the numbers refuse to move.
Treat AEO as a lens rather than a service. It is a useful way to check whether your pages can be understood in isolation, which is a good test regardless of who is reading. That is exactly how we apply it inside our SEO services: diagnose the gap first, then spend on the one thing that closes it.
FAQ
Common Questions About Answer Engine Optimisation
1. What is answer engine optimisation in simple terms?
It is writing and structuring pages so a search surface can lift a complete answer from them and credit you. It depends which surface you mean, featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants and AI answers all behave differently, but the underlying craft is the same: say the useful thing plainly, early, and without depending on the sentence before it.
2. Is AEO different from SEO?
Mostly no. Google’s published position is that optimising for its generative AI features is still SEO, with no separate requirements. It depends on how a proposal is written, as an emphasis inside an SEO programme the term is harmless, but as grounds for a second retainer covering the same hours it rarely holds up to questioning.
3. Do I need special schema markup for answer engines?
No, because none exists. Use the standard types Google already documents and supports, which help your content be understood and can earn rich results. It depends on your page types which ones apply, but any markup sold specifically as AI schema is describing something Google has not published.
4. How long before AEO work shows results?
Fact consistency can show within weeks; content depth takes months. It depends on how much of the delay is indexing rather than competition, a page has to be recrawled before any answer surface can use the new version, and the surfaces themselves update at their own pace. Treat one quarter as the earliest honest read.
5. Can I track whether ChatGPT or Perplexity mentions my business?
Only partially, and be careful with tools claiming otherwise. It depends on the surface: Google now reports generative AI performance inside Search Console, while third-party chat assistants offer no equivalent, leaving referral traffic in your analytics as the honest signal. Any single visibility score is an estimate built on sampling.
