Choosing a Domain Name in Malaysia: .com or .my?

The Short Answer: Choose a .my or .com.my domain if nearly all your customers are in Malaysia and you want a clear local signal. Choose .com if you sell across borders or plan to. Neither extension ranks better on its own. What matters more is a short, brandable name, registered in your company’s name, with you holding the login. Many SMEs buy both and redirect one to the other.

Picking a domain name in Malaysia feels like a five-minute job. It is one of the few website decisions that is hard to reverse. Your domain sits on your signboard, your invoices, your email addresses, your Google Business Profile and every backlink you will ever earn. Change it later and all of that has to move with it.

This guide from IZI Digital Marketing helps you decide between .com, .my and .com.my based on who your customers are, what you can register today and where your business is heading. It also covers the ownership traps that cause real damage. Settle this before you brief any website designer in Malaysia, because the domain shapes everything built on top of it. The short video below, from Google’s Search team, explains how Google reads country-code domains.

Should I Use ccTLDs for Sites Not Targeted to Those Countries?

PART 1 · DIAGNOSE

Does a .my Domain Help SEO in Malaysia?

IN BRIEFA .my domain tells Google your site is meant for Malaysia. It does not make you rank higher by itself. It helps you appear for Malaysian searches and can limit reach elsewhere. Content, links and your technical SEO basics still decide where you rank.

Google’s guidance on managing multi-regional and multilingual sites says a country-code domain is a strong signal that a site is meant for one country. So a .my or .com.my address is read as “for Malaysia”. A .com address has no country attached. Google works out its audience from other clues instead. Separate that into what the extension does and does not do:

  • What it does. Tells Google, and your customers, that you serve Malaysia. That fits businesses whose buyers are all local.
  • What it does not do. Give you a ranking bonus. Google has said that new generic extensions carry no special weight, in its note on how it handles new top-level domains. A keyword in the extension adds nothing.
  • What it can limit. A country-code domain ties your site to Malaysia. If you later want buyers in Singapore or Australia, a .com gives you more room.
  • What it no longer proves. Since .my opened to buyers worldwide in 2024, a plain .my says “for Malaysia”, not “a Malaysian company”. Only names such as .com.my still require local registration papers.

For shopfront businesses, the local work that moves results sits elsewhere: a verified profile, consistent address details and reviews. Our guide to ranking higher on Google Maps covers those. A domain is a signal. It is not a strategy.

Bottom Line: Pick the extension that matches where your customers are. Do not pick one because someone promised it would rank better.

BENCHMARK BRIEFING 1 OF 4

How Common Is .com Compared With Country Domains?

IN BRIEFVery common. About four in ten registered domains worldwide end in .com. Country-code domains, including .my, make up about 37% combined. That is why people type “.com” by habit, and why a good .com name is harder to find. Whatever you choose, build the site on SEO-friendly web design foundations.

The Domain Name Industry Brief for the second quarter of 2026 counted 401.6 million registered domains worldwide. The chart splits that total by type.

Share of Worldwide Domain Registrations by Type, 30 June 2026
Share of the 401.6 million domain names registered worldwide at 30 June 2026 held by .com, all country-code domains combined, other generic domains including new extensions, and .net, shown as horizontal bars, calculated from the Domain Name Industry Brief second-quarter 2026 release.

Aggregated by IZI Digital Marketing from the Domain Name Industry Brief Q2 2026 release (VeriSign, July 2026). “Other generic domains” is the total minus .com, .net and country-code domains. Global data, not Malaysia-only.

Two lessons follow for a Malaysian business. First, short .com names are scarce, because so many are already taken. Second, country-code domains are far from niche. A .my address looks as normal to a local customer as a .com does. The real question is fit, not prestige.

PART 2 · DESIGN

.com vs .my vs .com.my: Which Should You Choose?

IN BRIEFChoosing a domain name in Malaysia starts with your customers, then eligibility and name availability. Local-only businesses suit .my or .com.my. Exporters and regional brands suit .com. If the ideal name is free in two extensions, register both. Write the chosen domain into your website brief before you ask for quotes.

Most advice on this topic lists the features of each extension. That does not help you choose. The Decision Box below starts from your situation instead.

DECISION BOX · WHICH DOMAIN EXTENSION FITS YOUR BUSINESS

Extension Strength Watch out for Choose it when
.com Recognised everywhere; no country tie; easy to remember Short, clean names are often taken or on sale at a premium You sell, or plan to sell, outside Malaysia
.my Short, clearly Malaysian, open to any person or business Ties the site to Malaysia in Google’s eyes Your customers are local and you want the shortest local address
.com.my Signals a registered Malaysian business; familiar to local buyers Needs SSM papers; longer to type; people may drop the “.my” You are SSM-registered and trust signals matter to buyers
New extensions (.shop, .asia, .xyz) Good names still available Less familiar; some customers may doubt them Only as a short campaign address or backup, not your main site

Verdict: Local-only business: .my or .com.my. Regional or export ambitions: .com. Unsure: register the best name in both and pick one as your main address.

Then run the name itself through a quick test. A good domain passes the “radio test”: someone hears it once and types it correctly. Keep it under about 15 characters, avoid hyphens and numbers, and check it does not read badly when the words run together. Search SSM and the trademark register for clashes before you pay.

Bottom Line: The extension is a market decision. The name is a memory decision. Get both right before anyone designs a logo around it.

Who Can Register a .my or .com.my Domain?

IN BRIEFSince June 2024, anyone anywhere can register a plain .my domain. Second-level names such as .com.my still need Malaysian papers, usually an SSM certificate. A sole founder without SSM registration can take .my or .com today. Keep these papers ready alongside your website ownership records.

MYNIC, the .my registry, opened .my to global registration in June 2024. Before that, only people and organisations in Malaysia could hold one. The table sets out who can register each Malaysian domain name type today.

Domain Eligibility and Supporting Documents by Extension, 2026
Who may register .my, .com.my, .biz.my, .name.my and .com domain names in 2026, and the supporting document typically required for each, compiled from MYNIC’s registration FAQ and its 2024 global launch announcement.
Extension Who can register Typical supporting document Malaysian presence needed?
.my Any individual or organisation, any country Identity or company document from your home country No
.com.my Malaysian-registered companies and businesses SSM certificate (e.g. Borang 9 for Sdn Bhd, Borang D for enterprise); Borang B in Sabah and Sarawak Yes
.biz.my Commercial organisations and MSMEs, including SSM-registered foreign companies SSM or equivalent registration certificate Yes
.name.my Malaysian citizens, for personal use MyKad Yes
.com Anyone, through any accredited registrar None beyond accurate contact details No

Aggregated by IZI Digital Marketing from the MYNIC domain FAQ (supporting documents section) and MYNIC’s 2024 global launch press release, checked September 2026. Document lists change from time to time; confirm with your registrar before applying.

The MYNIC FAQ lists every accepted document, including those for societies, schools and professional firms. The name on the certificate should match the registrant name on the domain. A mismatch is the most common reason a .com.my application stalls.

Consultant’s Note: If you are still waiting on SSM registration, do not let that delay the name. Register the .my or .com version in your own name now, then add .com.my once the certificate arrives. The name you want is more likely to be gone in three weeks than the paperwork is to go wrong.

PART 3 · DEPLOY

How to Register a Domain Name in Malaysia Without Losing Control

IN BRIEFRegister the domain yourself, in your company’s name, with an email address you control. Keep the domain account separate from hosting where you can. That way a designer or host can leave without taking your address with them. Our buyer’s guide to web hosting in Malaysia covers the other half.

The most damaging domain problem is not the wrong extension. It is a domain registered by a designer, a former staff member or a hosting reseller, in their name. When the relationship ends, the business cannot renew, move or even point the domain elsewhere. Follow these steps to avoid it:

  1. Choose a registrar yourself. Use a MYNIC-accredited registrar for .my names. Compare renewal prices, not first-year promotions.
  2. Register in the business’s legal name. The registrant should be your company exactly as it appears on the SSM certificate, not a person or a vendor.
  3. Use a role email you own. An address such as admin@ on a mailbox the business controls. Avoid a staff member’s personal Gmail.
  4. Turn on auto-renew and two-step login. Expired domains can be re-registered by someone else. Store the login in your company password manager.
  5. Give your designer access, not ownership. Share DNS access or add them as a technical contact. Never transfer the registrant role to them.
  6. Record everything. Registrar name, account email, renewal date and DNS settings belong in one document your team can find.

Your domain also carries your email. If you plan to send newsletters, set up the email authentication records at the same time; our guide to email marketing basics for small businesses explains why that matters. Add the renewal date to your website maintenance checklist so nobody has to remember it.

Bottom Line: Whoever is named as registrant owns the domain. Make sure that name is your company’s, and check it today if someone else set it up.

Are Good Domain Names Getting Harder to Find?

IN BRIEFYes. Registrations grew by about 30 million in the year to June 2026. Each new name removes an option for someone else, and .com and .net alone grew by 8.6 million. If you have found a name you like, register it now rather than after the website design is done.

Registered domain names worldwide at the end of the second quarter of 2025, the first quarter of 2026 and the second quarter of 2026, split into all domains, .com and .net combined, and country-code domains, from the Domain Name Industry Brief releases for the first and second quarters of 2026.
Quarter end All domains .com + .net Country-code domains
Q2 2025 371.7 170.5 143.4
Q1 2026 392.5 176.1 146.3
Q2 2026 401.6 179.1 148.6
Change over 12 months +29.9 (+8.1%) +8.6 (+5.1%) +5.2 (+3.6%)

Aggregated by IZI Digital Marketing from the Domain Name Industry Brief Q1 2026 and Q2 2026 releases (VeriSign, April and July 2026). Q2 2025 and Q1 2026 country-code figures are calculated from the reported year-on-year and quarterly changes. Global data, not Malaysia-only.

The first-quarter 2026 brief and the second-quarter figures tell the same story. Growth is steady, not a spike. For you, that means the odds of finding a short, clean .com keep falling. Country-code names grew more slowly, so a good .my name is often still free when the .com is gone.

PART 4 · DRIVE

Should You Buy Both the .com and .my Versions?

IN BRIEFUsually yes, if the name matters to your brand. Owning both stops copycats and catches customers who type the wrong ending. Use one as the main site and 301-redirect the other. If you ever switch main domains, follow a website migration plan that protects rankings.

Holding a spare domain name in Malaysia is cheap insurance, but only a few extensions are worth it. Use this rule of thumb:

  • Always hold your main domain plus its closest twin. For most Malaysian SMEs that means .com and .my, or .my and .com.my.
  • Add common misspellings only if your name is often misheard. A name that fails the radio test may need one or two variants.
  • Skip the rest. Buying ten new extensions rarely stops anyone and adds renewal work every year.
  • Never run the same site on two domains. Duplicate copies split your signals. Redirect the spare domain to the main one, page by page if it was ever live.

Pick one main domain and use it everywhere: signage, invoices, social profiles and your Google Business Profile. Consistency is what builds recognition. If you serve several outlets, the local SEO work matters far more than a second domain.

Bottom Line: Own the twin, redirect it, and forget it. One main domain used everywhere beats a portfolio of spares.

Which Extension Fits Which Business? A Scoring Model

IN BRIEFNo extension wins every case. Local shopfronts score highest on .my and .com.my. Exporters score highest on .com. Founders without SSM papers cannot use .com.my yet. Find your row in the model, then check the name with your SEO plans in mind.

Scores weigh customer location, local trust, eligibility and room to expand. They are a planning aid, not measured client data.

Read across your row, not down a column. The gap between the top two scores is the real signal. Where it is one point, as for shopfronts and national SMEs, either choice works and name availability should decide. Where the gap is five or more, as for exporters, the extension matters and you should hold out for the right one.

THE VERDICT

Decide the Domain Before You Brief the Designer

Choosing a domain name in Malaysia comes down to three checks. Match the extension to where your customers are. Make the name easy to hear, type and remember. And register it in your company’s name, on an account you control. Get those right and the .com versus .my question matters far less than most people fear.

When you issue a tender for a new site, state the domain and who owns it in your digital marketing RFP. A good website designer will ask about domain ownership before they ask about colours. If yours does not, raise it yourself.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Which domain name is best for a Malaysian business, .my or .com?

Neither is better in every case. It depends on your customers. If they are all in Malaysia, .my or .com.my gives a clear local signal. If you sell abroad or plan to, .com gives you more room to grow.

2. Does a .com.my domain rank better on Google Malaysia?

Not by itself. It depends on the rest of your SEO, but Google reads .com.my as a signal that the site targets Malaysia. Rankings still come from content, links, speed and local relevance.

3. Can a foreigner register a .my domain?

Yes, for a plain .my name. It depends on the extension, though. Since June 2024 anyone can register .my, but .com.my, .biz.my and similar names still need Malaysian registration papers.

4. What documents do I need for a .com.my domain?

You need proof of Malaysian registration. It depends on your business type, but most use an SSM certificate such as Borang 9 for a Sdn Bhd or Borang D for an enterprise.

5. Should my web designer register the domain for me?

No. It depends on your setup, but the registrant should always be your company. Let the designer manage DNS settings with access you grant, while you keep the account and the renewal.

6. Can I change my domain later without losing SEO?

Yes, with care. It depends on how well the move is planned. Map every old page to its new address with 301 redirects, update Search Console and expect some short-term movement in rankings.
