Malaysia promised itself 10,000 public charge points by the end of 2025. It got 5,624. That shortfall is not a policy failure story for you. It is an order book.
The trouble is that the order book holds four very different customers, and the one that shouts loudest online is the smallest. A homeowner wanting a wallbox in the porch will find you on Google, argue about RM400, and never call again. A management corporation retrofitting a car park takes nine months to decide and signs for fifty times more. Most installers market as though only the first exists.
This guide applies the IZI Blueprint, the four-phase method we use in consulting engagements, to a Malaysian EV charger installation business: who is really enquiring, where the first ringgit belongs, what your Energy Commission registration has to prove, and the figures that tell you it is working. The video below frames the wider charging business first.

PART 2 · THE MARKET
The Malaysian EV Charger Market in Real Numbers
IN BRIEFThe public network is growing by roughly 215 chargers a quarter, which is steady work rather than a gold rush. The scarce resource is not demand. It is being the installer a buyer can find and verify in the fortnight they are deciding.
Three official readings set the floor under everything that follows.
- The target was missed by a wide margin. The Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint 2021–2030 aimed for 10,000 charge points by 2025. MARii counted 5,624 nationwide at the end of that year, as The Edge Malaysia reported.
- Fast charging is where policy delivered. By 31 March 2026 there were 5,839 public chargers, of which 1,971 were DC units against a government target of 1,500.
- Cars are outrunning chargers. The same reporting puts the charger-to-vehicle ratio near 1:16, and EV registrations in March 2026 at 4,717 units, up 58.5 per cent on the year before.
PART 3 · DIAGNOSE
How Do Malaysians Choose an EV Charger Installer?
IN BRIEFThe domestic buyer follows a short, anxious path that ends in a WhatsApp quote. It rhymes with how drivers pick a tyre service centre, except the fear here is electrical rather than mechanical.
Follow the sequence and you can see exactly where a quote gets won.
- The car is already ordered. Delivery is four to eight weeks out. That deadline, not the price, drives everything.
- They search on a phone at night. EV charger installation, wallbox installation KL, harga pasang charger EV.
- They open three tabs and one forum thread. Owner groups on Facebook shape more of this decision than any advert does.
- They check you are legitimate. Registered contractor, competent wireman, warranty. Anything vague here ends the conversation.
- They send one WhatsApp with a photo of the meter box. Whoever replies first with a real figure usually gets the job.
PART 4 · DIAGNOSE
Where EV Charger Installers Leak Enquiries
IN BRIEFSix leaks account for most of the loss, and four cost nothing but an afternoon. The pattern matches what we see in car detailing: a trade selling a job people cannot easily price for themselves.
Hand your phone to a friend who has just ordered an EV and watch where they stall.
- No indicative price anywhere. Buyers know a wallbox has a range. Hiding it reads as evasion, not professionalism.
- Your registration is not visible. If nothing names your Energy Commission contractor registration, the careful buyer keeps looking.
- Nobody replies after seven at night. That is exactly when the meter-box photo arrives.
- No site survey step is explained. The buyer cannot tell whether your figure is real or a hook.
- Only homes are pitched. A JMB chairman reading a domestic-only page assumes you cannot handle a car park.
- Finished jobs are never shown. Photographs of neat conduit and a tidy consumer unit sell harder than any adjective.

PART 5 · DESIGN
Which Channel Deserves Your First Ringgit?
IN BRIEFSearch advertising wins the domestic job because the buyer is already looking. Facebook and Instagram advertising is the wrong tool for that, and the right one for reaching committee members who do not yet know a retrofit is possible.
Four options compete for the first ringgit of digital marketing for EV charger installers, and four questions sort them: how fast the first enquiry lands, what each costs at minimum, which buyer it actually reaches, and what remains when the budget stops.
DECISION BOX · FIRST CHANNEL FOR AN EV CHARGER INSTALLER
| Option | Speed to first enquiry | Monthly floor | Buyer it reaches | Survives if you stop paying |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Business Profile and reviews | 2–6 weeks | RM 0–300 | Homeowners nearby | Yes |
| Search ads on install terms | Days | RM 1,200+ | Homeowners, ready now | No |
| Paid social to committees | Weeks | RM 800+ | JMB and MC members | No |
| Written guides and case studies | 3–6 months | RM 1,500+ | Commercial and fleet | Yes |
Verdict: Claim the listing first, whatever else you do, because it is free and it never expires. If you need cash this quarter, put the next ringgit into Google Search advertising and accept that you are buying domestic jobs. Only fund the guides and case studies once your quoting process can survive a committee reading it.
PART 6 · DESIGN
Setting a Budget From What One Install Is Worth
IN BRIEFBudget from gross profit per job, never from turnover, because hardware inflates revenue without funding anything. It is the same discipline a car tinting shop needs when film cost swallows most of the invoice.
Work the numbers in this order and you will have a ceiling rather than a guess.
- Average domestic job value. Charger, cable run, protection and labour. Say RM3,800.
- Gross profit after hardware. Around 35 per cent on a typical wallbox job, so RM1,330.
- Referral uplift. A tidy install in a gated neighbourhood tends to bring roughly a third of another job, lifting effective profit to about RM1,730.
- Affordable cost to win one job. A third of that profit, so roughly RM570.
- Affordable cost per enquiry. At one job per three enquiries, about RM190.
- Your monthly ceiling. Jobs you actually have crew for, multiplied by RM570.
Working out your ceiling takes about an hour
Bring your average job value, your margin after hardware, and what your crew can finish in a month. See where organic search fits that maths
PART 7 · DESIGN
Your Registration, Your Website and What a Buyer Verifies
IN BRIEFElectrical work is regulated, so your registration is the single strongest thing on your website. Show it plainly, the way a GP clinic evidences its licence rather than asserting its standards.
Five things have to survive a careful buyer’s minute on your site.
- Your Energy Commission contractor registration. Electrical work must be carried out or supervised by a registered electrical contractor, and Suruhanjaya Tenaga publishes the contractor registration requirements in full. Name yours.
- The competent person doing the work. A wireman or chargeman of the right class, named by role rather than implied.
- Where an EVCS licence applies. Supplying electricity to others, paid or free, is licensable under the Electricity Supply Act 1990, and Suruhanjaya Tenaga maintains the register of EVCS licensees. Explaining this to a JMB before they ask wins the job.
- An honest price band with what moves it. Distance from the board, single or three phase, trunking versus chasing.
- Photographs of finished boards. Neat terminations sell to the buyer who is quietly worried about fire.
PART 8 · DEPLOY
The First 90 Days, in Sequence
IN BRIEFTwo weeks diagnosing, two designing, then the free foundations before any media money moves. Sequence is the difference between a budget that compounds and one that disappears, in every sector we advise.
How to roll out digital marketing for an EV charger installation business in 90 days
Work through these in order.
- Weeks 1–2: Diagnose. Run the Part 4 test on your own enquiry path, and sort last year’s jobs into domestic, strata, commercial and subcontract.
- Weeks 3–4: Design. Pick one buyer to lead with, choose a channel from the Decision Box, and set the ceiling from gross profit per job.
- Weeks 5–6: Build the free foundations. Claim the listing, publish a price band, name your registration and competent person, and photograph three finished boards.
- Weeks 7–8: Fix the reply. Put a real WhatsApp number on every page, agree who answers after seven, and publish the survey step as a promise.
- Weeks 9–10: Deploy one paid channel. Fund it to its floor, aim every advert at the buyer you chose in week four, and tag enquiries by type.
- Weeks 11–12: Read and reallocate. Compare cost per enquiry against RM190, then scale, hold or stop on evidence rather than feel.
PART 9 · DEPLOY
Google Business Profile and Reviews for an Installer
IN BRIEFDomestic installs are searched for by area, so the listing carries most of your free visibility. Keep it in-house and feed it the same evidence your written guides use.
Google’s guidelines for representing your business are worth ten minutes before you touch a field. A suspension takes weeks to lift.
- Use your registered trading name only. Stuffing “EV Charger Installation Puchong” into the name field risks the listing you depend on.
- List each install type as a service. Home wallbox, strata car park, commercial site, three-phase upgrade.
- Set a service area, not a shopfront. Most installers have a workshop nobody visits.
- Post one finished job a week. Board, conduit run, charger mounted. Ten minutes for the proof buyers want.
- Ask for the review at handover. Standing in the porch with the car charging is the only easy moment.
- Prompt reviewers to name the area and the charger brand. Those are the words your next buyer will type.
BENCHMARK BRIEFING 1 OF 4
How Big Is Malaysia’s EV Charging Build-Out, Really?
IN BRIEFEight official figures, read as an installer’s market map rather than a policy scorecard. The right-hand column is the useful one, and it is the lens we bring before we recommend any paid search spend.
| Official figure | Value | What it means for an installer |
|---|---|---|
| Public charge point target, end 2025 | 10,000 | The policy signal that created the market you sell into |
| Actual, as at 31 December 2025 | 5,624 | 56.24 per cent of target — the shortfall is unbuilt work |
| Public chargers, 31 March 2026 | 5,839 | About 215 added in a quarter — steady, not a boom |
| AC chargers, 31 March 2026 | 3,868 | Two thirds of the network, and the work most installers can win |
| DC fast chargers, 31 March 2026 | 1,971 | Past the 1,500 target, so this segment already delivered |
| Charge points per EV on the road | about 1:16 | Sixteen cars per public charger, so home and strata carry the load |
| EV share of new vehicles, September 2025 | 5.56% | Against a 20 per cent by 2030 policy target, so plenty of room |
| EVs registered, March 2026 | 4,717 | Up 58.5 per cent on the year — that is your monthly enquiry pool |
Aggregated by IZI Digital Marketing from the MGTC Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint 2021–2030 and MARii and Road Transport Department figures reported by The Edge Malaysia, May 2026. The installer column is IZI’s own reading. Licence.
These rows describe a market growing faster in cars than in chargers. That gap is where your enquiries come from, and it will not close this decade.

Which EV Charger Enquiry Is Actually Worth Chasing?
IN BRIEFA modelled comparison of how many jobs each buyer type takes to reach RM100,000 of installed value. Read the last column before you decide where paid social budget goes, because patience is priced differently for each.
| Buyer type | Jobs needed for RM100,000 | Jobs | Typical job value | Decision length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Homeowner, single wallbox | 27 | RM 3,800 | 3–14 days | |
| Charge point operator subcontract | 7 | RM 15,000 | 2–8 weeks | |
| Strata car park retrofit | 3 | RM 38,000 | 3–9 months | |
| Commercial or fleet depot | 1 | RM 120,000 | 2–6 months |
Illustrative model by IZI Digital Marketing, built on typical Malaysian installed values per buyer type and a RM100,000 revenue block. Not measured results. Licence.
Twenty-seven porches or one depot. Both are real businesses, but they need different websites, different adverts and very different amounts of patience.
BENCHMARK BRIEFING 3 OF 4
What Does Each Monthly Budget Actually Buy?
IN BRIEFA modelled spend ladder against the RM570 ceiling from Part 6. The final column matters most, because it shows how much headroom is left before a search campaign stops paying for itself.
| Monthly budget | Domestic installs won a month | Installs | Cost per install | Share of ceiling used |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RM 0, foundations only | 2 | RM 0 | 0% | |
| RM 800 | 4 | RM 200 | 35% | |
| RM 2,000 | 8 | RM 250 | 44% | |
| RM 4,500 | 15 | RM 300 | 53% | |
| RM 9,000, multi-crew | 25 | RM 360 | 63% |
Illustrative model by IZI Digital Marketing, built on a RM3,800 average domestic job at 35 per cent gross margin and a one-in-three enquiry conversion. Not measured results. Licence.
Cost per install climbs as the budget grows, as it does in every trade. The question at the top of the ladder is therefore not whether RM9,000 pays back, but whether twenty-five installs a month can be done without the reviews turning.

BENCHMARK BRIEFING 4 OF 4
Is Malaysia’s Charger Roll-Out Speeding Up or Stalling?
IN BRIEFAt the measured quarterly pace, the 10,000 mark arrives around 2031 rather than 2025. That long runway is the argument for treating organic search as an asset rather than a cost.
| Point in time | Public charge points, against the 10,000 target | Chargers | Share of target |
|---|---|---|---|
| 31 Dec 2025, measured | 5,624 | 56% | |
| 31 Mar 2026, measured | 5,839 | 58% | |
| End 2027, projected | 7,344 | 73% | |
| End 2029, projected | 9,064 | 91% |
Derived by IZI Digital Marketing from MARii figures reported by The Edge Malaysia, May 2026. Shaded rows extend the measured quarterly step and are not measured results. Licence.
Treat the shaded rows as a pace, not a promise. Approvals are speeding up, with Energy Commission turnaround down from about sixty days to thirty. Either way this is a decade-long build, not a window you have already missed.
PART 10 · DRIVE
The Numbers That Tell You It’s Working
IN BRIEFFive figures, read on the same date each month, tell you whether your EV charger advertising is paying. Cost per enquiry by buyer type leads them, on the review cadence we run with every local business we advise.
| KPI | Where to read it | Change-of-course trigger |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per enquiry, by buyer type | Spend divided by tagged enquiries | Above RM190 for two months running |
| Quote-to-job conversion | Jobs signed against quotes sent | Below one in four |
| First-reply time to WhatsApp | Message timestamps, sampled weekly | Over two hours in working time |
| Share of value from non-domestic work | Invoiced value by buyer type | Falling for two quarters |
| New reviews naming an area | Business Profile, counted monthly | Fewer than two a month |
Watch the first and fourth together. Falling cost per enquiry alongside a shrinking share of commercial value usually means your adverts have quietly optimised themselves towards the cheapest, smallest job you sell.
FAQ
Common Questions About EV Charger Installer Marketing in Malaysia
1. How much should a Malaysian EV charger installer spend on marketing each month?
Most single-crew installers land between RM800 and RM4,500 a month. It depends on gross profit per job rather than turnover, since hardware inflates revenue without funding anything. Work out profit after the charger cost, then allow about a third of it per job won.
2. Do EV charger installers in Malaysia need a licence?
You need registration as an electrical contractor with Suruhanjaya Tenaga, with a competent person doing the work. It depends on the site as well: supplying electricity to others, paid or free, brings an EVCS licence into play under the Electricity Supply Act 1990.
3. Is Google Ads or Facebook better for EV charger installation leads?
Search advertising wins for domestic jobs, because the buyer is already looking for you. It depends what you are selling, though. Nobody searches for a car park retrofit before they know one is possible, and that awareness gap is what paid social is genuinely good at closing.
4. Should an EV charger installer publish prices online?
Publish a band with the two or three things that move it. It depends on your mix, since commercial work cannot be priced on a page. But a homeowner who finds no figure at all simply opens the next tab, and they rarely come back to yours.
5. How long before digital marketing brings EV charger installation enquiries?
Search advertising can produce enquiries within days; a Business Profile takes two to six weeks. It depends mostly on your reply speed after that. Expect three months before the numbers are stable enough to judge a channel fairly rather than emotionally.
THE VERDICT
Your Decision Checklist
Four decisions about digital marketing for EV charger installers should now be yours to make.
- Which buyer you are marketing to. Homeowner, strata, commercial or subcontract, chosen deliberately rather than accepted from whoever happens to call.
- Which channel opens the account. Listing first because it is free, then one paid channel funded to its floor rather than two funded to half.
- What your monthly ceiling is. A figure produced by gross profit and crew capacity, not a package tier from somebody’s proposal.
- The evidence that would stop you. Agreed in advance, with cost per enquiry tagged by buyer type from the first day.
One honest exception. If your crew is booked four weeks out and you are already turning work away, spend this quarter on prices and a second team instead. That will earn more than any campaign, and it costs nothing to test.
Porches or car parks — which should you chase?
