Search for the best heatmap tools and you get the same article ten times over. A ranked list, a feature grid, a paragraph on each vendor’s colour scheme, and a recommendation that assumes the choice is between paid products. That framing was reasonable in 2018. It is misleading now.
The heatmap market changed shape when Microsoft started giving the whole category away. Clicks, scrolls, session replays, no traffic limit, no card. Once a free product covers what most small sites need, the interesting question is no longer which tool is best. It is whether you have a reason to pay at all — and if you do, what exactly that money is buying.
There is a second question nobody asks, and it disqualifies more Malaysian sites than price ever will. A heatmap is a picture of aggregated behaviour. Aggregate too few visits and the picture is noise wearing a colour gradient. Most SME service pages do not clear that bar on desktop, on mobile, or on either.
The stakes are not trivial. Malaysia’s ICT and e-commerce activity contributed 23.4 per cent of the economy, or RM451.3 billion, in 2024 according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia’s Malaysia Digital Economy 2025 compilation. Plenty of that revenue passes through pages nobody has ever watched a visitor use.
Before comparing anything, it helps to see what a heatmap actually shows you and where the reading stops.

PART 1 · DIAGNOSE
What a Heatmap Can and Cannot Tell You
IN BRIEFA heatmap shows where attention pooled and where it stopped. It cannot tell you why, and it cannot prove a change will work. Treat it as the evidence that starts a conversion rate optimisation programme, never as the thing that settles it.
Heatmaps come in three useful varieties, and they answer different questions. Click maps show what people press, including things that are not links. Scroll maps show how far down the page the audience survives. Move or attention maps approximate where the cursor lingered, which is a rough proxy for reading on desktop and close to meaningless on a phone.
- Where the page loses people. A scroll map that collapses at 40 per cent tells you the three sections below that line are being written for nobody.
- What visitors think is clickable. Clicks on a static image, an unlinked heading, or a price that is not a button are the clearest signal a heatmap gives you.
- Whether the call to action is even seen. A WhatsApp button placed under the fold on mobile often collects fewer views than the footer.
- What it cannot do. A heatmap has no control group. It cannot tell you whether moving that button upward would earn more enquiries — that is a job for a split test, and split tests have their own traffic requirement.
That last line matters more than any feature comparison. Heatmaps generate hypotheses cheaply. They do not validate them.

How Many Pageviews a Readable Heatmap Needs
IN BRIEFScroll maps stabilise early, at a few hundred views per device. Click maps need thousands, because clicks scatter across dozens of page elements. Split your traffic by device first, the same way a correctly configured GA4 property should already be reporting it.
The model below splits monthly pageviews on one page into mobile and desktop at a typical 65-to-35 ratio. It then applies two thresholds: 500 views per device for a scroll map, 2,000 for a click map.
| Monthly pageviews on the page | Mobile views | Desktop views | Scroll map ready | Click map ready |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 300 | 195 | 105 | Neither device | Neither device |
| 1,000 | 650 | 350 | Mobile only | Neither device |
| 3,000 | 1,950 | 1,050 | Both devices | Neither device |
| 10,000 | 6,500 | 3,500 | Both devices | Both devices |
Illustrative model by IZI Digital Marketing, built on a 65-to-35 mobile-to-desktop split and two working thresholds — 500 views per device for a stable scroll map, 2,000 for a stable click map, July 2026. Thresholds are rules of thumb, not statistical guarantees; a page with two buttons stabilises sooner than one with twenty.
PART 2 · DIAGNOSE
Why Free Became the Default Answer in 2026
IN BRIEFMicrosoft Clarity publishes itself as free forever with no limits on traffic, across more than two million sites. That single product sets the floor for the whole category, so the sensible starting position is free and the burden of proof sits with anything charging money.
Microsoft’s Clarity product site states plainly that the tool is free forever, carries no limits on traffic, and is in use on more than two million sites and apps. Heatmaps, session recordings, AI summaries and mobile app coverage are all included. There is no upgrade path because there is nothing to upgrade to.
Meanwhile the paid end of the market has been consolidating. Hotjar was absorbed into Contentsquare, and its pricing page now redirects to the Contentsquare plans page. That does not make Hotjar worse, but it does mean the plan you sign up for this quarter may not be the plan you renew on. Budget with that in mind.
Not sure whether the free tier is enough for your site?
The answer usually turns on traffic and retention, not features — and both are quick to check. See how CRO stacks up on a low-traffic site

What Each Free Tier Actually Covers
IN BRIEFFour vendors offer something free, and only one of them is free without a ceiling. The others cap by daily sessions, monthly sessions, or a trial window — which is the detail that decides whether a free tier survives your busiest week.
Every row below comes from the vendor’s own published page rather than a review site.
| Option | What you get free | Where it stops |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Clarity | Heatmaps, session recordings, AI summaries and mobile app tracking, with no traffic limit | No paid tier exists, so the feature set is the ceiling |
| Hotjar Basic, now Contentsquare | Heatmaps and recordings on a daily session allowance, plus surveys | A daily cap, so a busy day is truncated rather than averaged out |
| Mouseflow Free Forever | 500 sessions a month, one website project, one funnel, unlimited users | Tracking halts when the 500 sessions run out; one month of retention |
| Crazy Egg Free | Instant Heatmaps, web analytics, conversion analytics and surveys, no card needed | Tracked-pageview heatmaps and stored recordings sit on the paid plans |
| Matomo Heatmap & Session Recording | Full plugin on a 30-day trial, no card, unlimited heatmaps and recordings | 30 days, then a yearly licence, and you need a Matomo install first |
Aggregated by IZI Digital Marketing from the Microsoft Clarity product site, the Contentsquare plans page, the Mouseflow pricing page, the Crazy Egg pricing page and the Matomo Heatmap & Session Recording listing, as published in July 2026. Free tiers change often — re-check before planning around one.
PART 3 · DESIGN
Four Reasons That Justify Paying for a Heatmap Tool
IN BRIEFFour constraints genuinely justify a licence fee: owning the raw data, keeping history beyond the free window, comparing page versions over time, and combining heatmaps with form and funnel analysis in one place. Anything else is a preference, not a constraint.
Write down which of the four applies to you before opening a pricing page. If none does, the decision is already made.
- Data ownership and residency. Free tools send visitor behaviour to a vendor’s cloud. If your board, your regulator, or your own reading of the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 means the raw data must stay under your control, self-hosting is the only answer and it costs money.
- A longer history. Free plans keep months, not years. If you need to compare this Ramadan campaign against last year’s, retention is what you are buying.
- Version comparison. Redesigning a page destroys the old heatmap unless the tool versions screenshots for you.
- Form and funnel analytics in the same view. Knowing which form field visitors abandon is usually worth more than the heatmap itself, and it is a paid feature almost everywhere.
DECISION BOX · WHICH HEATMAP SETUP TO BUY
| Option | Monthly cost | Who holds the data | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free hosted tool | Nil | The vendor | Almost every Malaysian SME site |
| Paid hosted tool | From about US$29 | The vendor | Teams needing retention, versioning or form analytics |
| Self-hosted plugin | Yearly licence plus hosting | You do | Regulated data, or a firm policy against third-party clouds |
Verdict: Choose the free hosted tool unless one of the four constraints above is written down and agreed. Choose self-hosting only when data residency is a policy requirement — it is the most expensive option once server time is counted honestly.

Published Entry Prices for Heatmap Tools
IN BRIEFPublished entry prices run from nothing to roughly 319 a month at the top of the self-serve range. The spread is driven almost entirely by volume allowance, not by heatmap quality, which is the single most useful thing to know before comparing plans.
Prices below are each vendor’s own published figures, taken in July 2026, in the currency the vendor quotes.
| Plan | Published monthly price | Volume included | Relative scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Clarity | Nil | No traffic limit | |
| Mouseflow Essential | 25 | 5,000 sessions | |
| Crazy Egg Analytics | US$29 | 5,000 tracked pageviews | |
| Crazy Egg Growth | US$99 | 50,000 tracked pageviews | |
| Mouseflow Advanced | 109 | 25,000 sessions | |
| Mouseflow Premium | 319 | 100,000 sessions |
Aggregated by IZI Digital Marketing from the Microsoft Clarity product site, the Mouseflow pricing page and the Crazy Egg pricing page, July 2026. Crazy Egg plans are billed annually. Mouseflow quotes its plan figures without a currency symbol on the page and localises by region, so confirm the billing currency at checkout. Hotjar’s self-serve plans are being folded into Contentsquare and Matomo’s plugin is sold as a yearly licence, so neither has a directly comparable flat monthly figure here.
PART 4 · DEPLOY
How to Set Up Heatmaps So the Data Is Usable
IN BRIEFPick the pages first, mask the sensitive fields, split by device, then wait. Most heatmap installations fail for one reason: someone reads the map after four days on a page that gets thirty visits, sees a scatter of dots that means nothing, and concludes the tool itself is useless.
How to set up heatmap tracking properly
- Choose three pages, not the whole site. The homepage, the highest-traffic service page, and the enquiry page. Sitewide heatmapping produces maps nobody opens.
- Mask every form field before you record anything. Names, phone numbers and IC numbers must never reach a vendor’s servers. Every serious tool supports masking; switch it on during installation, not afterwards.
- Split by device from the start. A combined mobile-and-desktop heatmap averages two different layouts into one picture that describes neither.
- Set a collection window based on the traffic maths. Use the briefing above: divide the monthly pageviews by device and work out how many weeks it takes to clear the threshold.
- Write the question down before you open the map. “Do people reach the pricing table on mobile?” is answerable. “Let’s see what the heatmap says” is how a tool becomes wallpaper.
Want someone to sanity-check the setup before you act on it?
A short audit usually settles whether the data is thick enough to trust, and what it is actually saying. Compare a CRO retainer against a one-off audit
BENCHMARK BRIEFING 4 OF 4
What a Year of Heatmapping Costs at Each Tier
IN BRIEFA year on the free tool costs nothing. A year on an entry paid plan costs a few hundred, and a year on a mid plan runs past a thousand. Read as an annual figure rather than a monthly one, the decision gets easier and slightly uncomfortable.
The model runs each published entry price forward at a flat rate with no plan changes.
| Setup | Month 1 | Month 3 | Month 6 | Month 12 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Clarity | Nil | Nil | Nil | Nil |
| Mouseflow Essential | 25 | 75 | 150 | 300 |
| Crazy Egg Analytics | US$29 | US$87 | US$174 | US$348 |
| Crazy Egg Growth | US$99 | US$297 | US$594 | US$1,188 |
Illustrative model by IZI Digital Marketing, built on the published entry prices on the Mouseflow pricing page and the Crazy Egg pricing page, July 2026. It assumes no plan changes, no annual discount beyond what the published price already reflects, and no exchange-rate movement — all three make the real ringgit figure move. Mouseflow figures are shown in the currency the vendor displays.
PART 5 · DRIVE
When Heatmap Data Should Change a Decision
IN BRIEFAct on a heatmap when it contradicts something you believed and the sample is thick enough to argue with. Otherwise file it and wait for more data. The same discipline should govern any analytics and CRO agency you engage — evidence first, verdict second, and never the other way round.
Three patterns are worth acting on immediately, because each one is a defect rather than a preference.
- Clicks on something that is not clickable. If visitors keep tapping a price or a photo, make it a link. This is the cheapest fix a heatmap ever produces.
- A scroll cliff above the enquiry form. When most of the mobile audience stops before the form, moving the form up beats rewriting the copy below it.
- A dead call to action. A button that receives almost no clicks despite being seen is either badly worded or asking for too much too early.
Everything else is a hypothesis. Log it, and if the page carries enough traffic, settle it with a test rather than an opinion. If it does not, make the change on judgement and watch the enquiry count — imperfect, but honest about its own limits.
FAQ
Common Questions About Heatmap Tools
1. What is the best free heatmap tool?
Microsoft Clarity, for almost every site. It depends on whether you need to own the raw data or keep years of history, since Clarity offers neither. For everything else it publishes itself as free forever with no traffic limits, covering heatmaps, session recordings and mobile apps.
2. Is Microsoft Clarity really free, or is there a catch?
It is genuinely free, with no paid tier to upgrade to. It depends on how you feel about the trade — behavioural data from your site sits on Microsoft’s infrastructure rather than yours. If your privacy policy and your PDPA obligations cover that, there is no catch worth worrying about.
3. How much traffic do I need for heatmaps to be useful?
Roughly 3,000 monthly pageviews on the page for scroll maps, and around 10,000 for click maps. It depends on your device split and how many clickable elements the page carries. Split the traffic by device first, because a combined map describes a layout nobody actually saw.
4. Is Hotjar still worth paying for in 2026?
Only if you need its survey and funnel tooling alongside heatmaps. It depends on how the Contentsquare migration lands for your plan, since Hotjar’s pricing page now redirects there. For heatmaps alone, a free tool covers the same ground without the renewal uncertainty.
5. Are heatmap tools legal to use in Malaysia?
Yes, when they are configured to avoid capturing personal data. It depends on your masking setup — recordings that capture names, phone numbers or IC numbers typed into a form put you in scope of the Personal Data Protection Act 2010. Mask sensitive fields before you record anything.
THE VERDICT
Start Free, Pay Only for a Named Constraint
The best heatmap tools question has a duller answer than the listicles suggest. Install Microsoft Clarity, because it is free, unlimited and good enough. Then leave it alone long enough for the sample to build.
Pay only when one of the four constraints above is written down and agreed by someone who will use the tool. Crazy Egg and Mouseflow both publish their prices openly, which makes the next step straightforward once the constraint is named.
What almost never justifies a licence is the feeling that a paid tool must produce better insight. It produces the same picture with more storage around it. The gap between businesses that improve their pages and those that do not has little to do with the vendor they chose. It has everything to do with whether anyone opened the map with a question in mind. Our approach to analytics and conversion work starts there, and the same reasoning shapes how we assess any agency shortlist worth taking seriously. The wider picture sits on the IZI Digital Marketing homepage.
