Schema markup gets sold two ways in Malaysia, and both are wrong. One says it is a ranking factor, so add as much as you can. The other says it is developer nonsense that marketers can skip. Neither survives contact with what Google actually publishes about it.
The honest version is narrower and more useful. It is a label you attach to information already on the page, so a machine reading it does not have to guess. That earns you eligibility for certain result formats, star ratings, prices, event dates, breadcrumbs, and it makes your page cheaper for an AI system to summarise correctly.
Eligibility is not a promise. Google decides whether to show the richer result, and it often declines. So the marketing question is not “which schema types exist” but “which ones change what a searcher sees, and which are quiet plumbing worth doing once”. This guide sorts them. The walkthrough below covers the mechanics if you would rather watch than read.

PART 1 · DIAGNOSE
What Schema Markup Actually Does, and What It Does Not
IN BRIEFMarkup describes what is already on your page in a format machines read reliably. It buys eligibility for rich results, not position. If a page is not ranking at all, markup will not rescue it, that is a different diagnosis entirely.
Notice what Google measures when it makes its own case for structured data. Every outcome quoted in its introduction to structured data is a click, a visit or a minute spent on the page. Not one of them is a ranking position. That absence tells you more than the usual line about schema not being a ranking factor, because it also tells you what to measure afterwards.
Three consequences follow, and they are the whole strategic picture:
- It labels, it does not add. Google’s guidelines are explicit that markup must describe content visible to the user. Marking up a price that does not appear on the page is a policy breach, not a clever shortcut.
- Eligibility is granted, display is decided. You supply valid markup; Google chooses whether the rich result appears for that query. Perfect markup with no visible change is a normal outcome, not a fault.
- Machines beyond Google read it too. The same labels help AI answer engines pull the right figure instead of guessing, which is why markup now sits inside answer engine optimisation rather than beside it.

What Large Sites Actually Measured After Adding Structured Data
IN BRIEFGoogle publishes four figures from sites that implemented structured data. Every one measures clicks, visits or engagement, none measures position. Read together, they describe what markup is for: winning the click you were already eligible for.
| Organisation | What was implemented | Reported outcome | Metric type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nestlé | Pages surfaced as rich results | 82% higher click-through rate | Click-through |
| Rotten Tomatoes | Structured data on 100,000 pages | 25% higher click-through rate | Click-through |
| Food Network | 80% of pages converted to search features | 35% increase in visits | Traffic |
| Rakuten | Structured data across content pages | 1.5x time on page, 3.6x interaction rate on AMP | Engagement |
Aggregated by IZI Digital Marketing from Google’s structured data introduction and its published case studies, 2026. These are very large publishers; treat the direction as instructive and the magnitude as unlikely to transfer to a small Malaysian site.
PART 2 · DESIGN
Which Schema Types Are Worth Your Time
IN BRIEFGoogle’s feature gallery lists dozens of supported types. A typical Malaysian service business genuinely needs about six of them. The rest either do not apply to your business or produce nothing a searcher can see.
The useful sorting question is not “is this type supported” but “if I add it, does anything change on the results page”. Three answers exist, and each deserves a different level of effort.
DECISION BOX · WHICH SCHEMA TYPES TO IMPLEMENT
| Your business | The trap | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Service business with a premises | Adding Product markup to service pages | LocalBusiness, Organization, BreadcrumbList, WebSite |
| Content or blog-led site | Marking up every page as an Article | Article on posts only, plus Breadcrumb and Video where real |
| Online shop | Star ratings invented to earn the stars | Product with real price and stock; reviews only if genuine |
| Recruiting, events or courses | Ignoring the one type with a dedicated surface | JobPosting, Event or Course first, everything else after |
The types with dedicated Google documentation, LocalBusiness, Product, Breadcrumb, Article, are the ones with a real chance of changing your listing. Types outside that gallery still help machines understand you; they simply will not repaint the search result.
This is where most advice you will read is quietly out of date. FAQ schema still tops nearly every “essential types” list, but Google announced changes to HowTo and FAQ rich results back in 2023, restricting FAQ results to well-known government and health sites and HowTo results to desktop. Keep the markup if you have it, unused structured data causes no harm, and machines still read it. Just stop expecting it to change your listing, and put the effort into a type that can.

Schema Types Ranked by Visible Payoff Against Effort
IN BRIEFSorting the common types by what a searcher actually sees against how long they take to implement produces a short priority list. Four types carry most of the value. Pair this with an honest audit before you commit a developer week to markup.
| Schema type | What the searcher sees | Visible payoff | Typical effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product | Price, stock and rating in the listing | High, needs live feed data | |
| Breadcrumb | Readable path instead of a raw URL | Low, template-level, done once | |
| LocalBusiness | Consistent name, address and hours | Low, one block sitewide | |
| Article | Clearer author and date signals | Low, automated by most CMS | |
| VideoObject | Thumbnail and key moments | Medium, per video, only if you host video | |
| Organization | Usually nothing visible | Low, worth it as machine-readable identity | |
| FAQPage | Nothing, for most sites since 2023 | Low, keep it for machines, not for stars |

PART 3 · DEPLOY
How to Add Schema Markup Without Breaking Anything
IN BRIEFUse JSON-LD, add one type at a time, and test before and after. Google recommends JSON-LD because it sits apart from your visible content, which makes it far harder to break a page while marking it up. The load cost is negligible, unlike the scripts that actually slow your pages.
- Confirm the information is on the page first. Markup describes visible content. If the price, address or rating is not shown to the reader, do not mark it up.
- Choose JSON-LD over Microdata or RDFa. All three are valid, but Google recommends JSON-LD as the easiest to implement and maintain at scale, and it keeps the markup out of your HTML body.
- Start with one type on one template. Breadcrumb or LocalBusiness is the sensible first move, sitewide effect, low risk, easy to verify.
- Validate with the Rich Results Test before publishing. Paste the code or the URL and read the errors properly; a warning is optional, an error means ineligible.
- Watch the rich result reports in Search Console for a month. Templating and serving issues break markup after deployment far more often than the original code was wrong.
Most Malaysian sites run on WordPress, where a schema plugin handles the common types automatically. That is fine, and it is also where the second problem starts, plugins and themes both emitting markup, producing two competing descriptions of the same page. Check for duplicates before you add a third source.
CONSULTANT’S NOTE
The most expensive schema mistake we are asked to unwind is not bad code, it is invented star ratings. A site adds aggregate ratings nobody left, the stars appear, traffic lifts, and then the markup is flagged and the whole domain’s rich results go quiet. The upside was borrowed; the downside was not. If the reviews are real, mark them up. If they are not, leave the field out and sleep well.

Where Schema Implementations Usually Go Wrong
IN BRIEFMost broken markup fails for four predictable reasons, and only one of them is a coding error. The rest are judgement problems, marking up things that are not there, or letting two systems describe the same page differently.
| Failure mode | Relative frequency | Consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Duplicate markup from plugin and theme | Conflicting descriptions of one page | |
| Marking up content not visible on the page | Policy breach; rich results withdrawn | |
| Missing a required property | Silently ineligible; no visible change | |
| Markup breaking after a template change | Rich results disappear months later | |
| Wrong type for the page | Machines misclassify what you sell |

PART 4 · DRIVE
What to Measure Once the Markup Is Live
IN BRIEFJudge markup on click-through rate for the pages that gained a rich result, not on rankings. Google’s own recommendation is a before-and-after comparison on stable pages, the same discipline that makes technical SEO work provable rather than assumed.
Pick pages that were already ranking and were not seasonal, record several months of Search Console data, then add the markup and watch the same pages. Rankings will move for reasons unrelated to your markup; click-through on a page holding position is the cleaner signal.
There is a second payoff that no dashboard reports. Clean, accurate markup makes your page easier for AI systems to quote correctly, which matters more each year as answers get assembled rather than listed. That is the same reason it belongs in the conversation about getting cited in AI Overviews.

How Schema Coverage Builds Across the First Six Months
IN BRIEFAlmost all the coverage gain lands in the first month, because sitewide types apply to every page at once. Reading that curve honestly stops month four feeling like a stall when it is simply the shape of finished work.
| Period | Work in that period | Indexed coverage | Scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Week 0 | Whatever the theme emits by default | 20 | |
| Week 2 | Duplicates removed, sitewide types added | 68 | |
| Month 1 | Page-type markup on services and posts | 84 | |
| Month 3 | Errors from Search Console cleared | 92 | |
| Month 6 | New pages inherit the template; upkeep only | 95 |
Illustrative model by IZI Digital Marketing, built on the deployment and monitoring sequence described in Google’s structured data introduction. Indexed to 100 for a small business site of roughly fifty pages. Planning estimates, not measured results.
THE VERDICT
What We Would Do in Your Position
Give it one focused day. Audit what your site already emits, delete the duplicates, then add Organization, LocalBusiness and Breadcrumb sitewide and Article on the blog template. Validate every template with the Rich Results Test, then leave it alone and check Search Console monthly.
Add Product, Event or JobPosting only if you genuinely sell products, run events or hire, those are the types with a dedicated result surface worth chasing. Everything else on a thirty-type proposal is filling a scope document.
If the markup is clean and the pages still are not earning clicks, the problem sits upstream in the content or the offer, not in the code. That is the diagnosis worth paying for, and it is where our SEO services start. More of how we think about search sits across our published insights and on the IZI homepage.
FAQ
Common Questions About Schema Markup
1. Is schema markup a Google ranking factor?
No. It makes a page eligible for richer result formats and easier for machines to classify, which is a different thing from position. It depends on what you are measuring, if a rich result appears, click-through often improves, and that traffic gain is real even though the ranking did not move.
2. Which format should I use, JSON-LD, Microdata or RDFa?
JSON-LD, in almost every case. Google states all three are equally acceptable when implemented correctly, but recommends JSON-LD as the easiest to implement and maintain at scale. It also sits separately from your page content, so marking up a page cannot accidentally break its layout.
3. How long before I see anything after adding schema markup?
Days to weeks, once Google recrawls the pages. It depends heavily on how often your site is crawled and whether the type you added has a visible result format at all. Confirm the markup is valid first, then give it a month before drawing conclusions.
4. Can I add review stars to my service pages?
Only if the reviews are real and shown on the page. Google’s guidelines require markup to describe visible content, and invented ratings are one of the more reliably punished shortcuts in SEO. Collect genuine reviews and display them, then mark them up.
5. Does a WordPress schema plugin do enough on its own?
For most small business sites, close to it. It depends on your theme, the common problem is a plugin and a theme both emitting markup, so check for duplicates before assuming you are covered. Anything unusual, such as products with variants or recurring events, usually needs a hand-built block.
